 | | | | "Mandingo" is a good movie and it shows how brutal slavery could really be. However the [US DVD by Blax] was bogus for cutting out key scenes. I gave mine away and got the VHS version which was not cut. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | I saw this film when I was younger, around seventeen. Even today, this story on slavery and the relationship between master and slave has the power to draw you in. You just cannot stop wondering, what if. If slavery were allow today, what kind of society would we have? | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | Good points. | JV47842 |

 | | | | A must-see movie about slavery. Hard to believe this was made by a major Hollywood studio (Paramount) even though this was the 1970's. This would cause much controversy and probably be withdrawn today. And that is a sad fact about what political correctness has done to U.S. society. The film has a great cast; James Mason, Perry King, Susan George, and Ken Norton is surprisingly good in his role as Mede. Forget about "Roots" and see a REAL movie about slavery! And if you have a strong stomach see "Goodbye Uncle Tom", the ultimate slavery film!! | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | I give "Mandingo" 5 stars because it was the original (gave the sequel, "Drum", 4 1/2 stars). While campy, "Mandingo" has a little more serious tone than its sequel, "Drum". While I thought Ken Norton did an adequate job as Meade, it was Perry King, Susan George, and Brenda Sykes who really shined in this movie. While dealing with a serious subject, it is a movie that will have you laughing at times. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | I saw this film when it aired in I believe '73. It could never be made today. James Mason is terrific, and even though the movie didn't exactly follow the book it was very close. It is almost a documentary on slavery in the American south if viewed with that in mind. I highly recommend it. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

| "Mandingo" is a film unlike any other. It's a surprise that a major studio would fund a film with such controversial subject matter but I am glad someone did. On the surface it may seem like any other movie about slavery, but what I think the film is truly about is how lost a people can become in their own ignorance and pride. The naive evil of the slave owners, some worse than others, is what drives this film and forces us to ask the hard questions about ourselves and our country and where it was heading as a society. The acting is top notch throughout, with Perry King and Susan George leading the ensemble cast. James Mason and former heavyweight boxing champ Ken Norton also are standouts. The time and period detail are captured beautifully, and the overall direction of Richard Fleischer are impeccable. The film was made in 1974 and it hasn't aged one bit. Its story is as timely today as it was when it was originally made. See it. |
