An old school flick with great cinematography and sets, but also some awful special effects. Although made in the 80s, the pacing of this one reminds me of a 60s Shaw Brothers swordsman film, and despite the fact that the choreography is pretty good and Derek Yee and Sun Chien are present, there is also very little action. The story, however, is atypical and strange, and has supernatural elements with some unusual plot twists.
I kind of enjoyed it, and laughed out loud at the end, but it will dissappoint anyone expecting an exciting gongfu flick of the caliber of others from the Shaw Brothers' later repertoire. If, however, you like slow, weird 60s style Shaw Brothers supernatural sword drama mysteries with too many green stage lights, then you may enjoy this. |
