| Hi. I enjoyed the HK version of the movie. I'll list all of the differences right here. If you have not seen this movie at all, I suggest that you do not look at this list for this will spoil the movie.
- The HK version is all dubbed in Cantonese (and it has a Mandarin dub). No English. The voice for Jackie Chan is the same voice you hear in his other 80s films. The American version only has a few short Cantonese phrases that you hear, but no dubbing.
- The credits in the HK version are all in Chinese. In the American version they are all in English. The American version is also missing the "Golden Harvest" logo, but is included in the credits.
- Both versions are about the same length, but contain many alternate scenes.
- In the Hong Kong version, while Billy Wong (Jackie Chan's character) is chasing a bad guy who was part of the gang that kills his partner, a pedestrian tells him where he went.
- In the American version, after the boat chase scene, there is a the funeral of Billy's partner (a short scene). This is omitted from the HK version.
- After Billy gets yelled at by his superior in the HK version, the black man who claps for him tells him "We're with you Billy" (omitted from the U.S. version).
- In the American version, Garucci calls Jackie Chan a "chink bastard" after he sees him talking with Laura Shapiro. This is dubbed to say something different in the HK version.
- In the American version, after Gironi (Billy's new partner) and Billy see Whitehead (the chief policeman) in HK, the inspector tells them that Whitehead is just upset and wants to nail Ko just like they do. He then tells them where they traced the number that Garruci was using. In the HK version, Whitehead tells them where they traced the number.
- Before the fight in the massage parlor, in the U.S. version, Billy gets a pedicure and Gironi gets a manicure. Then, when they are going to get their Shiatzu massages, a woman comes into Gironi's side, takes off her clothes, and lies under the table where Gironi can see her.
- When Gironi and Billy are being interrogated by the massage parlor guy, and Billy flips the rug to put the gun in the air and catch it and land on the desk, this is shown in slow motion in the HK version.
- After leaving the massage parlor, Billy goes to a dancing school to find a woman named May-fong Ho (but she goes by the name of Sally). Billy then recognizes her necklace (Billy was given Tin Ho's coin, and her necklace had the same coin). When she is reluctant to speak to Billy, she tries to get away, and two men that are fighting over her try to beat up Jackie in a gym room. Jackie wins easily of course, not getting hit once, definitely the Chinese fighting scene style of Jackie. This is one of the fight scenes not in the American version. After leaving the massage parlor in the American version, the movie cuts right to when Gironi and Billy go to see Lee HIng.
- When he interrogates Miss Ho (a.k.a. Sally) in a restaraunt, she tells him to go to Lee Hing, the partner of her father who was killed by Ko.
- In the HK version, after Billy and Gironi see Lee Hing, and after the chase scene, Ko's huge body guard beats up the massage parlor guy for failing to get the Billy and Gironi, and is demoted to pimping. This is omitted in the American version.
- In the American version, when Gironi and Billy go back to their hotel after seeing Lee Hing, and see the briefcase of money, the phone rings, and it's Ko's voice saying to take the money and leave, but Billy refuses (and says "It's not your money we want, it's your ass). In the HK version, it's a woman who works for Ko telling them to take the money and leave (and Billy says, "It's not Ko's money we want, it's Laura Shapiro).
- In the HK version, when Gironi and Billy go the press conference, there is a scene where Garucci tells Ko's huge bodyguard that this whole issue (kidnapping Laura because Shapiro didn't pay for the last shipment of drugs) was a misunderstanding, but the cops were getting to close to their operation. The American version this is omitted, and Billy tells Gironi to follow Garucci and he'll see what Lee Hing got.
- After the press conference scene in the HK version, Lee Hing meets his friend Wing (his informant) in a shipyard to find out where Laura Shapiro was taken. Ko's men go to kill them. Soo Ling beats most of them up, but when trying to help Lee Hing (he can't fight), Benny Garucci steps out the car, and kills Soo Ling and Lee Hing (this is another fight scene omitted from the American version). Then Billy and Lee Hing's daughter go to shipyard where they were supposed to meet with Lee Hing, but find both of them dead, and Billy convinces Hing's daughter to help him destroy Ko. Instead of this scene, in the American version, after the press conference, Billy goes with Lee Hing's daughter and the black Navy Seals guy to see Lee Hing, and they find his boat destroyed and Lee Hing dead, and convinces Hing's daughter to help him find Ko.
- In the American version, after finding Lee Hing dead, Lee Hing's daughter and Billy go to see a fortune teller. The fortune teller tells them not to go after Laura because Benny Garucci came to negotiate and that Laura will be returned. But in the American version, after finding Lee Hing dead, Billy goes to May-fong Ho's house to tell her that she may be in danger. Ho's maid goes into a room, and leaves, and when Billy goes into the room where the maid went, he finds a bomb, but defuses it. Then the massage parlor guy comes and tells Miss Ho that she's in danger, and that he is no longer with Ko. Then some guys come to kill Miss Ho, but Billy shots them away. Then the massage parlor guy tells Billy that Laura is being kept at Ko's shipyard in exchange for help to get out of Hong Kong and into America with Miss Ho. Billy then tells Gironi to go the ship yard. In the American version, Gironi just follows Garucci to the shipyard.
- After Gironi follows Garucci to the shipyard, and when he leaves, Garucci sees Ko and tells him that this whole fiasco is just a simple "misunderstanding," but that the cops were getting to close to their operation.
- In the American version, before the scene where they go to rescue Laura, you see many women working in the factory naked (don't know why they are naked). You see breasts, butts, and pubic hairs. This has been removed from the HK version.
- In the American version, Laura is kept in a room where naked women are working. In the HK version, she is just guarded by 3 men in a room.
- The fight scene between Garucci and Billy is much, much longer fast paced in the HK version. Also, in the HK version, the part where Garucci breaks one vase in Billy's hand and when Billy smashes the other vase on Garucci is in slow motion. The HK version fight has more acrobatic stunts and does not have Jackie getting beat up the whole time like in the American version.
- During all the action scenes in the HK version, the sound effects are different with gun shooting and the Kung Fu. The Kung fu uses much more powerful sound effects like in most of Jackie's films.
- Picture quality is better in the American film, but this is the case with most HK films compared to American films, but this doesn't really matter.
- The music scores are the same in both films.
I prefer the HK version way more to the American version. The American version just has too much talking. It is slightly longer by a couple of minutes than the HK version but not much. |
