A good surprise. I expected a war movie, a genre Chang Cheh is not really confortable with; but it's a kung fu thriller instead, and a good one with an all-star cast (Ti Lung, David Chiang, Chen Kuan Tai, Wong Chung), a perfect villain (Japanese actor Yasuaki Kurata), a strong story with its tragic mechanism which leads to a bloody finale, in the pure tradition of this great director!

The Korean war has just ended and Ti Lung is a free man on his way to meet up with his buddy, played by David Chiang. Unfortunately, before he meets up with his buddy, Ti Lung intervenes when he sees a fellow military man being beat by a group of four guys. Soon Ti Lung is accused of the murder and his friends (David Chiang, Wang Chung and Chen Kuan Tai) try to help him prove his innocence after he escapes from a military hospital while under guard.

Very entertaining film with four of the actors from "The Savage Five". Yasuaki Kurata gives an excellent portrayal as the villain our four heroes go up against. Throw in the great cinematography, and you have a must-see thriller!

Super film from the Shaw Brother Studios. A lot of bloody action with guns, knives, etc. A must-see for all HK fans. Fantastic.

Having taught in Korea, I immediately had an soft spot for "Four Riders": the opening panoramic shots of urban and rural Seoul really brought back a flood of memories. But is the movie itself any good? Read on.

The setting is post-war Korea. The four main characters are played by four-fifths of The Savage Five (another fine movie). We follow these characters into the world of vice and easy money, as represented by a local bar frequented by ex-military types. Japanese actor Yasuaki Kurata is perfectly cast as the owner of Hello John (a nice dig at strangely translated goods and services in some Asian countries).

The action is great, the acting is very good, and it's always interesting to see how Shaw Brothers pulls off movies that feature a more modern setting. With Four Riders, I think they made a real winner.
