Submersion Of Japan All Content Used With Permission. ![]() "Submersion of Japan" (1973; AKA "Tidal Wave" in the U.S.) is definitely one of the best (if not THE best) films that Toho ever produced. The special effects are state-of-the-art for the time and still hold up well today: Spectacular! Toho took making this movie seriously, unlike some of the other FX movies produced by them. The acting and cinematography is superb as you feel a sense of dread as the people of Japan face their 'worst case scenario'! Like the difference between the Japanese and American versions of other Toho films such as Godzilla (1954), the Japanese version of SOJ is a much more intelligent (and much longer) thriller. Highly recommended!
