 | | | | I loved this film. Saw it when I was a kid and fell in love with it. It's one of those Wong Fei-Hung-like heroic films. When I viewed it again, however, I noticed the fighting didn't have to get sped up so much, but I still love this film. Definitely for fans of those Wong Fei-Hung films. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | I didn't care for this one at all. I can handle the flying and jumping around if it is done well, but it just looks ridiculous in this movie. The movie seems to drag on forever (I fell asleep twice watching it) and is just not interesting. I give it two stars only for Ti Lung, but even he can't save this one. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | If you can follow the plot and reasoning, the fights are exciting. I wasn't quite thrilled with the ending of the movie. The action wasn't bad at all, just be attentive and follow the intricacy of the film. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Action was good. It just seemed to me that the film tried too hard to copy elements of Bruce Li and Jet Li films. With the martial abilities of the actors, I feel the movie could have been better. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | I didn't care for this movie (maybe my expectations were too high considering the star power). The storyline was slow with very little action. The only good part was at the end. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Somewhat disappointing to find the majestic Ti Lung in a movie where his character is so under-played and his skills are wasted and undisplayed... | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | The movie had good fight scenes. It really takes you back if you grew up watching these kinds of flicks at the movies with your moms and pops. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Ok martial arts movie. Watching the dubbed version may have made it worse. Pretty good action and fighting. Sammo Hung plays a strange prison guard. Recommend as an addition to a martial arts collection, definitely not a necessity. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | This movie was awesome. The action was well paced, and the swordfighting was top-notch, the kung fu fights were great as well. It was alot of wire-fu, but the actors displayed great martial arts skill as well. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | First of all, I need to make something clear. Sammo Hung does NOT star in this film. He does make a cameo appearance in a spectacular bladefight, but the main characters are played by Ti Lung, Yeung Fan and Cynthia Khan.
The story is about the adventures of some patrotic rebels who want the old dynasty restored.
There are some heavy wireworks here, but most of the times, the fights are spectacular as you would expect. The characters are interesting, especially the villains who, for once, are not one-dimensional. Cinthya Khan and Ti Lung deliver solid performance, and so do the rest of the cast.
I am not a critic, but I would say this is one of the finest swordplay movie ever made in Hong Kong. Don't miss it.
Also recommended: "The Assassin". | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

| This is an excellent movie. It is well directed and has surprisingly high production values. I was a little disappointed at the very beginning (not knowing what to expect) since it begins with a swords-against-guns sequence (yeah, right!), but what follows is a marvelous gem of a film. The movie is exceptional because it has a decent plot, based on the traditional martial arts values of honor, chivalry and loyalty (and Chinese nationalism) not to mention some brilliant fighting scenes. The kung-fu tournament sequence stands out. It is simply marvelous from beginning to end: Each challenger shows some attractive forms and seems invincible until he gets his butt kicked. I really felt I was watching a traditional "platform boxing tournament" unfolding--anticipating the next boxer, sensing their tension and relishing their clash. It was great to see Ti Lung back in a martial arts movie--although he is a side character. Overall this is great entertainment. |

| Quite a well-done period piece starring Ti Lung as a government officer who intends to bring down the Empress Dowager so that the Emperor can ascend to power. Ti Lung and his cute assistant (played by the beautiful Cynthia Khan) runs into the ex-leader of the Black Flag society, a band of highly skilled martial artists who fought against the Japanese, and they eventually find that they have a common goal.
The whole film is full of fight scenes. Rosamund Kwan's role in this film is negligible and you can hardly remember her appearances after you've reached the ending. Some of the scenes are highly undercranked, and wire-fu is used in large quantities in the beginning and at some parts of the finale. There's a lot of excellent sword-fighting choreography, and the lead actor (Yeung Fan) does some really neat short-blade forms.
Cynthia Khan uses a spear in the finale and she goes up against an old guy who's really good with a rope dart. And of course, that rope dart guy easily outshined Cynthia Khan with his excellent skill. Yeung Fan goes up against yet another old guy who's really good with his hands, and he does some tiger claw forms. Ti Lung gets beheaded shortly before the finale, by the way, so he's not there in the big fight scene. Ng Sing doesn't look very good in this movie, and the stuff he does are just okay.
There is also this kungfu tournament midway through the film, in which the opponents of the first battle used baguazhang, which is interesting since bagua is not featured in many films (and it finally showed up in a big way in Jet Li's The One). Some bad guy also shows up during the kungfu tournament, and he's using Flower Fist, but it's quite different from the Flower Fist that Leung Kar Yan uses in Knockabout. Yeung Fan shows that he's just as good with his hands and legs as he is with swords. This guy is pretty good, and it's quite a pity he doesn't show up in many films.
Overall, this movie was quite well done, and has many, many long fight scenes with plenty of bare-hands and weapons forms. There are also a number of "horrible-ways-to-die" scenes which will make you laugh. And the two funniest death scenes were brought about by Yeung Fan and his short broadsword, one early in the movie and another one at the end. |

 | | | | | An idealistic social reformer befriends a government official, but their opposing ambitions destroy their friendship. First of all, I like this movie quite a bit. BUT, I'm mostly going to say bad things about it. 1) Poor pacing. The first fifteen minutes consists of two action scenes which are only marginally related to the plot. Then things slow way down. 2) The use of wires is pretty bad. I like wirework when it does something to enhance the fight scenes, but in this movie it looks like they said "Hey, cool, let's make everything look fake!" 3) Too much undercranking at times. On the other hand, the story is pretty good, the fight scenes are generally nice, and the ending is a nice change from "riding into the sunset" like in many kung fu movies I can think of. As of now this is the last good movie Sammo Hung has had anything to do with. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | | BLADE OF FURY - It's a very good film - extremely manic fight scenes and lots of them. Very bloody. I highly recommend Ringo Lam's "Burning Paradise" too - the films always go together in my mind, possibly because of big swords :-) | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |
