| The Ultra Series is one of the prominent Tokusatsu (Special Effects) superhero genre productions from japan, along with "Kamen Rider" and "Dinosaur Beast Ranger" (which became "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" here in the States). There have been 11 additional Ultraman television series from 1967 to present (2006). A new theatrical film debuted in Japan earlier this year.
Ultraman's creator, Eiji Tsuburaya, is a pioneer in special effects who was responsible for bringing Godzilla to life in 1954. He was the director of special effects on over 100 films--everything from WWII films to samurai films to every major monster film produced in Japan, including "Mothra" and "King Kong". |
