| I loved Maggie Cheung and Do Do Cheng in "Doubles Cause Troubles". So I bought this. This is the sequel to a previous George Lam/Do Do Cheng vehicle. The characters they play became a couple in that movie. In this one, the characters face a relationship crisis when Lam's character, overwhelmed by work and underwhelmed by Cheng, nearly falls into a relationship with Maggie Cheung's character. I don't know about you, but I find George Lam to be DULL. His acting style is more realistic and lowkey than most Chinese actors, but that's not what I want to see in a Chinese movie. What I loved in Doubles Cause Troubles was the manic interplay between Maggie and Do Do. In this movie they are almost never in the same scene, and when they are they each interact with Lam, not each other. I always find Maggie worth watching; I think she's one of the greatest actresses ever. In this movie she plays a (TV commercial) director who has just spent a long time in the US. Part of the movie takes place in Paris.
Maggie quite capably portrays a woman who has learned the confidence and bluntness that is effective in dealing with Americans and Europeans but is disturbing and confusing to Chinese. Do Do is the plain-but-good-hearted Chinese woman who understands how to care for her man's home and family, but not how to deal with women like the Maggie character. George is the fellow who has to decide to be good or bad.
What will George do?
Some thought and time went into making this movie, including setting up jokes and comments about the film industry, and into providing nice scenery, but I found this movie pretty boring. |
