ALTERNATE SYNOPSIS:
Nico Palmieri (Fabio Testi) is a police inspector who battles against hoodlums terrorising a sleepy Italian village, extorting cash from the locals. With the threat of violence, no one dares to act except a restaurant owner (Renzo Palmer) who approaches Palmieri and sings like a canary. As a result, his young daughter is raped. Discovering that the terrorism is related to drug dealers, Palmieri is forbidden to continue investigating his case by his superior - so he goes it alone. Palmieri recruits men who have become victims of the crooks and the film ends with a bloody massacre. Bullets fly and blood spatters the screen.
The Big Racket is undoubtedly director Enzo G. Castellari's most violent feature. Based on the corruption and terrorism that plagued Italy during the 1970s, The Big Racket was also inspired by the vigilante storylines of Don Siegels' Dirty Harry and Michael Winner's Death Wish. The Big Racket is violent, but it's also exhilarating and stylish. Bodies are pummelled with bullets as they are shot in Peckinpah-style slo-mo with countless blood squibs bursting forth. This prime example of the 1970s Italian police movie genre is also graced with a punchy score from the De Angelis brothers. |
