| Overview: | The inhabitants of a small farming village in rural Japan, circa 1600, enlist the help of seven samurai--some down on their luck, some looking for some action, and some just hoping to learn from experience--to protect their village and crops from bandits. The story starts with the villagers being threatened by bandits who proclaim that they will return soon when the crops are ready for harvest. The villagers send men out looking for samurai to help defend them; and the samurai, in turn, help to enlist more samurai until there are seven. The bulk of the film centers around the interesting love-hate relationship between the samurai and the villagers. The villagers are grateful to the samurai, and yet fearful and resentful. By the time the bandits return, virtually the entire village is ready to strike, and the battle is epic in proportion.
This film is very difficult to write about since so much has has been written about it already. We concur with everything you've read everywhere else claiming that, "this is quite possibly the best film ever made", "this film has been imitated more than any other", "Kurosawa invented the modern action film when he made Seven Samurai", and "this is a film you absolutely must own". All these statements are true, and so we are very proud to be able to offer this brilliant gem to you today.
