ALTERNATE SYNOPSIS:
The story is set in modern-day Japan. The main character, Taeko Okajima, is a 27-year-old single woman living in Tokyo. She begins one summer by taking a vacation to see some friends in the farmlands in Yamagata. As a break from her city lifestyle, she intends to live the life of farmers. One of the farmers at the household Taeko stays at is Toshio, a kind, simple man about her own age. He spends a lot of time showing her country life.
