As a graduate of the so-called “fiftth generation” of Mainland Chinese filmmakers, Zhang Yimou first gained experience as a cinematographer for others, including director Chen Kaige (Yellow Earth, The Big Parade). He moved on to making his own films, beginning with the little-seen Red Sorghum and Codename Cougar (AKA The Puma Action). But it was the initially banned and censored Ju Dou (1990) that brought him to the attention of the West. All three films featured performances by the lovely Gong Li. The director and his leading lady continuing making films until the breakup of their personal relationship in 1995.
