| "My Sassy Girl" is a film that's a bit uneven, but with the good far outweighing the bad. The comedic moments are great, as is the camerawork, and the performances of the lead actors are spectacular. However, the running time is overly ambitious, and there are a few scenes in the film that should have been left on the cutting room floor.
In other words, it's a film like this that really makes me hate giving a numerical score to film reviews. When "My Sassy Girl" is in a good moment, it's spectacular; but there are a few unforgivable scenes that would knock it down from a 4.5 to a 4 for me without placing this review in the context of director Kwak Jae-Yong's subsequent work and its importance within contemporary Korean cinema. In particular, there's a short montage of the two friends goofing around at an amusement park that looks like it comes straight out of a made-for-TV movie.
There are many unexpected twists and turns within "My Sassy Girl" that one would not expect in the typical romantic comedy narrative. This formula is actually rather successful overall, and while the second half takes a turn for the more dramatic, the characters have become so well defined that the melodrama is well-earned. |

 | | | | When I first saw this movie, I couldn't get enough of it. I wanted every version of it. Jae Young is a sure-shot talented and awesome filmmaker. I hope this one will be released internationally and be known as a starting point of new age of filmmaking worldwide. I want this movie to go Hollywood and be recognized in the industry. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Well, there's nothing I can say that has not already been said about this film. This movie itself is worth buying a region free DVD player just so you could play it. Trust me, it's just that perfect. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

| My Sassy Girl is simply about a extremely odd pair who go through extremely odd situations to overcome odds and find true love in each other. Getting the dvd for only 5 bucks at a local store in chinatown, i really didnt expect quality entertainment. I just wanted something to do over a long weekend so i got the movie, the story starts out slow and i was ready to be disappoited, but the clever comedy inserted in all the right places not only gives more texture to the plot but also binds the film together as a wonderfully crafted comedy romance, to be honest, this movie is the best romance film i have ever seen (that may be due to the fact that im not that big a fan on ramantic films), but even through the painful process of dubbing, it is clear that the acting was great, the music really brought out the mood of each scene, and it really touched me! Compared to all the american romantic comedies (I live in the US), this one is actually not korny, and it doesn't leave with the dreadful after taste that makes you think, man, I really shouldn't of seen that. Instead, this feel makes you laugh, and if you touchy it makes you cry, even if you're not, it touches you, and you'll walk out a believer in true love. |

 | | | | This movie is one of the best Asian romantic comedies, if not the best of the romantic comedy genre as a whole... This is one chick flick you guys will want to watch with ur gals. The humor in here is very funny, even the ending is simply amazing. Single guys may find this movie a motivation to come out and stand around the subway waiting for a drunk girl to come by. I can't recommend this movie enough. I would even recommend this over western movies! | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | This is a good film. The pace of the film is quite fast. Although it is a bit [boring] in the begining, the ending is quite amazing! | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

| I imagine by now you already have an idea of the plot. The strange thing is: I find I cannot say less of the plot, nor can I explain more. The summaries are quite apt and cover just about the entire essence of the film. Yet nothing can adequately prepare you for what phrases like "bizarre behaviour" and "violent tendencies" TRULY mean in this film. Perhaps the most I can do for the viewer-to-be is to state that it is not an understatement (oh, far, far, from it) either to use the cliché, "spectrum of human emotion", here. I hadn't realised something until I saw this film; it was as if I was physically jolted awake. How much insipid Hollywood/morbid HK fare had I imbibed up till now? In this one film I was brought to contemplate the definition of real love, then flew to feel disgust, revulsion, depression, then soared to laughter and revelation.
I wonder; dare I say it? How dare I call this film - such a film, without any somnolent artistic pretensions, yet art nonetheless - brilliant. We forget that it is terribly easy to bore, but terribly difficult to simply, well, entertain. And how it entertains. This film uses nothing less than the seemingly irreconcilable instruments of absurdity, exhilaration, perversion, wit, terror, love, pain (on EVERY level) and - of course - vomiting. (Lots of it. Lots and lots of it. Lots and lots and lots - sorry. Had to get it out.) Throw in philosophy too: the audience ruminates (almost against their will - they cannot help themselves) on the strange workings of fate, destiny and sheer, dumb, horrible luck. Perhaps the only real complaint I can muster is the pacing - how fast it was. Imagine how it is to hear screams of laughter and then sobs emanating from humans all around me in darkness in intervals of all of - one minute. Throughout all of 137 minutes.
Now, who should I credit for the film? Reviewers always seem to feel the irrepressible urge to find somebody to credit (the synonym of blame, really) but I must confess I feel utterly lacking in that aspect - at least with regards to this film. Was it the director? The actors? Even the SHOES in the show seemed to be doing their part to make me tear in laughter and grief. In other words, all the parts and pieces of this particular puzzle showed their best sides. They fit together excellently - so oddly. How many of us can make another laugh, cry and cringe in one and the same breath? Perhaps this film is something like that one strange love affair in your life you can never truly forget. |
