Lavishly shot in Eastmancolor and Shawscope, with an unparalleled cast, the sublime story included royal princesses, a decades-long romance, palace betrayals, battles, intrigues, and of course a little gender-bending just to spice up the plot. So expressive was the film's libretto that it actually vied with rock and roll for popularity among Asian audiences.
