"Flesh For Frankenstein" (but on the Italian film posters it was called, philologically, "Frankstein") along with its twin film, "Blood For Dracula", presents a rather complicated inside story especially with regards to Antonio Margheriti's role as director. Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey were used to making films in a completely autonomous and independent way. They usually worked on a simple draft of a script leaving a lot of room for improvisation and often incorporating impromptu ideas. The producer, Carlo Ponti, called Antonio Margheriti to work alongside the two American artists basically in order to do the special effects and the 3-D sequences included in both films which were shot using a new method, a very complicated one with polarized lenses. In actual fact the producer, who was frightened by Warhol and Morrissey's laid-back modus operandi, wanted them to work alongside a reliable and competent director like Margheriti who would be able to act as a technical "rescue aid" in case there were problems or difficulties which unavoidably came up. The end result, in terms of taste and style, has to be credited to the work carried out by the Factory, whereas Margheriti's work is recognizable, apart from the special effects, in certain transitional seguences (in "Frankenstein" all of the part with the children, "Sistole and Diastole"), made once shooting was over in order to bring together material which would have been impossible to edit in a consistent way. While in America the authorship of both films was recognized as belonging to Warhol and Morrissey, in Europe the distribution preferred to focus on Margheriti's name, who was attributed with the overall direction of the films which in actual fact didn't exist but would have enticed the audiences in a greater way.
