Towards the mid-80s, director Stelvio Massi and producer Gabriele Crisanti traveled to Latin America for six months, making four film-documentaries with the huge amount of material they shot. "Mondo Cane Oggi" is without a doubt the best film of the lot.
Overview:
Towards the middle of the eighties, the director Stelvio Massi and the producer Gabriele Crisanti were responsible for an attempted revival of the world-movie genre for which the films by Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi, "Mondo Cane" and "Mondo Cane 2", made more than twenty years earlier, were the most famous and successful examples. The idea was to initially go to Latin America for a few weeks with the objective of making a series of films which documented controversial problems like drugs and AIDS. This expedition became a six-month stay in the South American states and Massi and Crisanti made four film-documentaries with the huge amount of material they shot. The first one to be edited was "Droga - Fiume senza ritorno" (1986) which was later called "Crack - L'insidia del 2000" then finally "Droga - Stereo di Dio", but it was not successfully distributed in Italian theatres. "Mondo cane oqgi - L'orrore continua" (1987) was more fortunate, maybe also because of the more varied and complex structure which brought to mind the great models of world-movies from the past. "Mondo cane 2000 - L'incredibile" was made in 1988, directed not by Massi but by the producer Crisanti (even though Massi in actual fact directed it) and "Mondo ossesso" made in 1989, which is nothing more than a re-edited version of the material shot for "Droga - Stereo di Dio" with the addition of some new pieces about Japan, this film also was not released in Italy. "Mondo cane oggi" is without a doubt the best film of the lot. The subject of the documentary-investigation is in actual fact based on the display which man gives of himself along with the contradictions, those special and universal ones which accompany him everywhere. The man which Desmond Morris had described as "The Naked Monkey" in his book.
