"Bay of Blood", directed by Bava following "Cinque bambole per la luna d'agosto", which had left him disappointed, is a film which the director always claimed to be proud of. The reason being that working with quite a free script where the story was not governed by the hard fast necessity of logic, Bava was able to concentrate on the purely visual aspect of the film, in a free way, even during the shooting and abandoning himself to the formal games which he enjoyed so much. The result being, as well as a work of art which proceeds for simple approaches to scenes in defiance to continuity, a fierce and bloody film, the real act of foundation of the slasher genre films which Americans only developed years later and paid their debts to the original when, in "Friday the 13th", two lovers in a bed are stabbed by Jason in an identical way to the which the killer in "Bay of Blood" murders two unfortunate youths who were making love. The invention of the deaths and their accumulation mixes well with the idea that the characters of the film are nothing more than insects which are to be stabbed while their agony is observed, in the same way that one of the characters of the story, an entomologist, stabs beetles for his collection. The film had various titles before the definitive one was chosen. The script, based on a story by Dardano Sacchetti with the title "Cosi imparano a fare i cattivi", then became "Reazione a catena", but Zaccariello, the producer, wanted to change to "Ecologia del delitto" because at that time the theme of ecology was trendy (!). There are many interesting names in the cast, Claudio Camaso, Gian Maria Volonte's brother who committed suicide shortly afterward in prison, the greatly-missed Laura Betti, who was a very close friend of Bava's, Luigi Pistilli, Claudine Auger and Chris Avram.
