Distributor: HK Legends

Format: Region 2 DVD, PAL

Length: 99 min

Aspect Ratio: Widescreen (1.85:1), anamorphic

Audio Tracks: English (Dolby Digital 5.1), Cantonese (Dolby Digital 5.1)

Subtitles: English

Extras: First there is the superb commentary track by Bey Logan and director Gordan Chan who divulge plenty regarding the actors, filming and the Hong Kong movie industry in general, which very interesting listening, especially where Chan points out the subtle uses of CG in the film. Next is the 17-18 minute ‘Making Of’ which tends to focus around Aaron Kwok, beginning with the camera man waking him up in his hotel room. There are subtitled interview snippets from Chan and the stars mixed in with genuinely interesting behind the scenes footage. As this is of the more promotional nature there is also a music video by Aaron Kwok midway through which contains clips from the movie. There are two other interviews with Gordon Chan (15 min.) and Andrew Lin (18). While Chan occasionally repeats much from the commentary, Lin’s interview is the most revealing as he talks about is background in specially effects amongst other things. There is a picture gallery which contains mostly stills from the movie and is not of much interest. Hopefully DVD makers will start to include other photos such as film premieres and posters etc. to make these features more worthwhile. Surprisingly the trailers on offer are quite interesting, especially the ‘HK Teaser’ and the ‘Music Promo’. Neither contain footage from the film and while the teaser is understandably vague, the promo is particularly misleading regarding Kwok’s character who is portrayed as a spy or special forces. The ‘Original Theatrical Trailer’ is subtitled where appropriate and dates the film as well as mostly focusing on Kwok while the updated and slick ‘UK Promotional Trailer’ made by HK Legends emphasizes the action and not must else. Further HK Legends trailers are included for another 8 titles in their ever expanding range which also include info and DVD specs. Chapter and audio selection round of a good DVD with enough material to justify a purchase.

Notes: Occasionally soft and a little grainy in places, noticeable by the use of pale colors, but all round a fine anamorphic transfer supporting fine cinematography. The Singapore Air Force stock film used early in the film is however of a considerably lesser quality compared with the rest of the film. The two main gunfights are the highlights of an excellent Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. The English dub, also presented in 5.1, is a vast improvement on previous efforts and non Hong Kong movie regulars should find this easily accessible, although the Cantonese track contains plenty of English anyway.
