This is one of the best movies I've seen for a long time, and trust me, I've seen them all. Despite the fact that the fat suits were obvious and in some situations the actors seemed obviously not used to the fat suits, this movie was really good. Even though the plot was simple, it was a good, solid one. I think this movie wasn't really about the props or about how long a woman's hair could grow in a month, or 8 months, or whatever, but this movie was about conveying the emotions and sentiments the directors wanted us to feel when we watched this movie from beginning to end. Sometimes we have to criticize and review/comment on the aspects of the movie that the makers of it wanted us to focus on- and not nitpicking little things that don't really make the movie what it really is. Anyone who hasn't watched a good, wholesome movie in a long time would particularly enjoy this one.
| First glance I was horrified by the fat suits. Another glance the horrible "fat hands." Another glance horrified by the depiction of how "bumbling", "insatiable", "always going to take food off your plate the instant you don't look" fat people are. You have to notice that the sensitivity to overweight people is not a huge hush-hush issue in Asia where it's simply "be skinny or--duh--of course you'll get made fun of." The miraculous 'recovery' of both actors to their beautiful selves by ending was a little far-fetched. Overlooking the moral issues, just Mini Mo trying to get back with her ex Kurosawa, having some obstacles (very much understating obstacles) and instead developing feelings for someone who helps her out--film was cute and entertaining, commanding the same spark that Andy and Sammi bring to films they make together. I'd recommend the film if you like the chemistry they have together. |
As Sammi Cheng herself says in the "making of" documentary, "I expressed exaggeration in a more exaggerated manner". That's certainly true, and this exaggerated exaggeration by the two lead characters is just too much for this viewer. Apparently, Sammi Cheng and Andy Lau's collective interpretation of overweight people is "very loud and very retarded". They yell, they whine, they bumble, they're despicable. Thanks but no thanks...

Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng in fat suits. Not really groundbreaking make-up effects or anything. You could tell they were wearing makeup and rubber suits - it was pretty good I suppose, but this has certainly been done better elsewhere. I guess the moral of the story is that fat people can't be happy - only skinny people can be truly happy and in love. Aside from the anti-fat campaign this movie seems to run with, it's a fairly decent story. I live in the US and over here we make special allowances for the disadvantaged, crippled, impaired or otherwise imperfect. I guess in HK (seems to me to be this way I think), they treat cripples like dirt and look upon fat people like they are a blight on society. Interesting cultural differences. Anyway - Andy's fat and Sammi is fat. Sammi used to be skinny and was the girlfriend of a pianist who became famous and went off to tour. She missed him and began to eat too much to fill the void of lonliness until she became a 300 pounder. She meets Andy in Japan and latches on to him and he goes on a mission to make her skinny again so she can be with her boyfriend who doesn't know she's gotten fat. The interactions between the two are funny at times and at other times excruciating. I was particularly annoyed that Sammi's hair grew 8 inches in less than a month, but what cha gonna do? Overall I'd give it a 6.5/10 The DVD has a Making Of and is only a few bucks more than the VCD, but the VCD is certainly good quality. |
