Spiritual Kung Fu All Content Used With Permission. ![]() The spirits are silly looking, act ridiculous, and are very annoying, but Jackie's fighting in the second half is absolutely top-notch. If you can make it though the silliness you will be pleasantly surprised. -William Giordanella (see my profile) ![]() This is a fun-filled kung fu comedy starring the master that created the genre, a young Jackie Chan! The plot is silly, the special effects are dated, and the martial arts action is great! This is one of Jackie's comedies from the seventies and will appeal to mostly Chan fans. Basically, Jackie learns kung fu from spirits trapped in a training manual that was thought lost for all time! The comedy and action start from there, culminating in a great finale as Chan takes on James Tien! ![]() What makes this movie bad is this concept that Jackie is taught and led by the spirits. Actually, that is not bad, but that we can see them annoyingly prancing around in tights ruins this movie. I guess that was the comedic effect. What is good about this movie is the storyline, the twists, and the fighting. A lot of people do not know just how good Jackie Chan is because they are put off by the comedy. This is one movie where I have to work to not let all the annoying fairy-like spirits get in the way of my enjoyment of the movie. Otherwise, I would rate it higher. ![]() This is another of Jackie Chan's old-school classics. Here, he plays a bumbling student in a monastery who suddenly finds himself taught by a quintet of naughty spirits in advanced martial arts, the "Five Style Fists." A number of scenes are a bit silly, and probably overplayed for laughs, but once Jackie finally gets to show off his expertise of the snake fist, the tiger style, etc., it's a real treat! ![]() This movie really isn't the best out of Jackie's, but for anybody that loves great fights and Jackie's comedy, then this movie is one to see... The first time I saw it I didn't like it much, but trust me it has its worth. I say, in a sense, some of the fights are a must see.
