Great cast and great action! There were some scenes (one fight in particular) where Monkey style "won" with comedy-choreography rather than stunt-fighting. I guess I was hoping for something closer to “Drunken Master II” style of fights which are hard-hitting yet funny and ingenious. Minor quibbles aside, I highly recommend this one.-Lewis (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
This is another martial arts film that excites you as well as thrills you!
The film has love, greed, action, and togetherness, all rolled up in one. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, beginning to end. And this is only one film in the collection of martial arts films that HKFlix recommends. -RL49631 (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
Another Lo Lieh great. The story of an opera performer who gets set up to lose her sister as a concubine. He loses face behind this and gets punished. He eventually finds out that he was set up and trains a student in the Monkey Fist. Lots of action, excellent fight sequences. 2 thumbs.-AC48634 (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
An amazing film by Master Lau Kar-Leung! Hsiao Ho is a real find as the monkey-like protoge that winds up taking revenge for his master on the man who crippled his hands.

Lau Kar Leung in top form with Shaw regulars: a classic! It's heavier on the comedy than his more recent "Drunken Monkey" or work in the early parts of "Drunken Master 2". The Hung Gar variations on display may annoy some in the effort made to emulate a twitching monkey. Nonetheless, it really delivers in the end. [I recommend] seeing this widescreen, in Cantonese with decent subs.-TR36977 (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!

Probably my favorite kung fu movie. This movie features the best monkey kung fu committed to celluloid. The choreography is tight, the training is inventive and inspiring, and the characters are engaging.-Mad Monkey (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!| AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | Lau Kar Leung/Liu Chia Liang is the most committed and innovative director of martial arts film who has yet lived. Great movie! What a display of this complicated Monkey style! Fantastic performance by Liu Chia Liang and Hsiao Hou! Lo Lieh plays a great villain as usual. Kung fu with some comedy. If you're looking for a top movie featuring the Monkey style, that's the one to get! Another one also would be "Iron Monkey" (with Chen Kuan Tai)--probably the top two movies featuring this unusual style, "Iron Monkey" being more old school. You'll love to look at the beautiful Kara Hui Ying-Hung (who also starred with Liu Chia Liang in "My Young Auntie"). If you're looking for a movie featuring the monkey style, look no further! Lui Chia Liang is one of the greatest. Lo Lieh plays the villian who fancies Liang's sister so he tricks him and cripples his hands so he can no longer fight. Liang moves on and performs shows with his pet monkey to make money until some bullies kill it. Liang is then befriended by a small thief and he teaches him monkey kung fu!-DM17178 (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
Classic Shaw Bros. fare here. A great story, featuring a talented man who has a potentially bright future ripped from his hands, but is given a second chance through his energetic apprentice. The only thing keeping me from giving this a 5 star rating is the monkey abuse. Poor monkeys...-MD36578 (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
Another quality Shaw Bros. movie. Excellent choreography and storyline. I don't consider this to be "The movie that stands out from the rest" of the Shaw movies, it's simply as good as the others.-Johnnie Freeze (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!

| Very enjoyable. Although this movie does not have a great deal of straightforward Kung-Fu fighting action (instead, much of it falls into the semi-comedic martial arts sequences) the acrobatics displayed throughout the movie are amazing. I usually don't like martial arts films that offer this much slapstick fighting humor, but it is so well done it's impossible not to be entertained. It's filled from beginning to end with "don't try this at home" moves.
The story is about a master who is framed by his host in order to attain the affections of the master's sister. This works (of course) and the master's hands are crippled as well.
Later the master of Monkey Kung-Fu meets a young man named what? Monkey of course! Monkey is good hearted and courageous, but unable to defeat the thugs that run his town. Eventually the master trains Monkey and there is a final showdown with the leader of these thugs who is also the man who framed the master in the beginning of the story.
As convoluted as all that sounds, it works. I would definitely recommend this movie. It's one that I'm sure I'll watch over and over again. |

| Wow, Lau Kar Leung really produced a gem here with his stellar directing and martial arts skills. It's also very versatile in combining drama, comedy, great action, and equally great training sequences. I especially liked how monkey (Hsiao Ho) was persistent enough to finally get his training, and how he improved after the vigorous training but still couldn't quite measure up to the mass of adversaries and returned to further work on his skills. The idea was refreshing from some other training sequences in films where a novice trains a bit and conquers the martial world without a single setback.
I was also impressed with the kung fu and comedy skills of the underrated Hsiao Ho. Lau Kar Leung was brilliant as usual and used very creative fights sequences to convey the comedic elements and show off the actors acrobatic abilities. I especially loved the scene when monkey slapped like 10 men surrounding him forcing them to turn towards the camera with silly facial expressions (I rewound and paused like 10 times). Lo Lieh, once again, did an admirable job playing a skilled villain--can't go wrong with that.
My only knock on the film is that the plot was based on dramatic elements that were barely followed up on. Lau Kar Leung seemed to care more about his dead monkey than his sister (Kara Hui) being forced into prostitution by a man that framed him and broke his hand to pieces. He never seemed too interested in rescuing her or any type of revenge and showed no emotion after the word of her demise and had no mention of this event at the end, which was a major flaw to the dramatic element of the film.
Finally, Curious George R.I.P. |

This film was incredible! I almost gave it 4 1/2 stars simply for the scene of monkey abuse, but I soon realized that dealing out a double dose of revenge on the bad guys made me give it the full five stars. Lau Kar Leung and Hsiao Hao have some amazing training scenes in classic monkey fist. Once again, Lau never lets us forget that he is a master director and martial artist. The story becomes even more endearing when one witnesses the bond between master and student growing. A truly bad ass movie!-AK-47 (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
The kung-fu action just felt "conflicted" to me. What I mean is that the director couldn't decide whether this is a deadly serious revenge flix, or a comedy. Sammo Hung films usually manage to find the right balance (warriors two) between all out brutal violence and comedy action. I felt this movie just couldn't find that same balance. Also, the fight scenes are well done, but not that original. Watching the action, I kept thinking, yeah, that looks good but I've seen it all before.

If you're a fan of the more offbeat styles of kung fu that can be viewed in the Shaw Bros. catalogue, than you will love "Mad Monkey Kung Fu". The movie's star, Lau Kar-Leung, displays jaw-dropping acrobatic skills along with his protege Hsiao Ho, or Little Monkey in the movie.
The story is pretty standard. A brothel owners conspire to frame an opera performer named Chan of sexual advances on his wife. The performer, named Chan, is crippled in order to spare his life, and his sister falls into the hands of the evil brothel owner.
The movie has several action/comedy scenes that are lighthearted but serious in their tone and what is at stake. The climactic ending should not be missed. The film reminds you of "Drunken Master" at times--not because of the story, but it reminds you of a film that Jackie Chan could easily star in. Highly recommended!!!! -SK10840 (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!

| "This world is hard and cruel and no one ever gets a chance here."
Great movie! One of the top-ten HK flicks to have in your collection. An early tragic/comedy kung fu classic with lessons about 'wu de' and great action.
Old Master Lau Kar Leung performs in and directs this classic kung fu action movie showcasing the authentic monkey style kung fu.
It is said that the Master Leung may have learned about monkey style from the old grand master Ken Tak Hoi. That's just kung fu "tea time talk" though--don't really know if it is true.
The young actor playing the Monkey system 'tu di' is quite good in his role as the young rascal who slowly talks the old master into teaching him.
This movie also features the lovely and deadly Kara Hui ("Young Auntie") using her years of kung fu training with great effect.
The film teaches a moral lesson about the kung fu world's ethics. "Martial artists should practice hard and avoid overindulgence." This may be the central premise of this movie, as the main character falls into a terrible trap due to his failure to follow this precept, and so does the antagonist.
If you like kung fu, kung fu training, and kung fu movies; you will certainly enjoy this film very much.
Highly recommended. |

This is one of the best martial arts films ever to come out of Hong Kong. I wish I could give it a higher rating than a five I'd give it 20 stars. The story is not bad and the fights whew what can I say they are awesomely choreographed. Lau Kar Leung is just gracefull and Hsiao Huo is a martial arts wizard. Lo Lieh is also a great villian as usual. This is a must see movie.-RH19159 (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!

| This is a must for anyone who loves the open hand martial arts! The special effects are the actors/martial artists! I can't say enough about this old school wonderful Shaw Brothers film, and I have never really cared for the "Monkey Style". I have seen other artists do the same form but it just seemed rather silly. I have newfound respect and admiration for the style/form and the artists in this film.
A famous martial artist is framed for raping his host's wife at a dinner occassion where the wine has been flowing liberally. Honor calls for the death sentence but the martial artist's sister agrees to be a concubine to the gang leader and the punishment is changed to smashing his hands so he no longer can do Kung Fu.
Thus he is forced into becoming something of a street performer with his beloved little monkey. The gang leader is furious and tells his men to kill the monkey, which they do. So chattered physically and emotionally he sees no way to make a living, no point in continuing.
He soon meets a petty street thief who wants to work as his monkey, providing enough for their meager existence. It is evident the new "monkey" needs much training and is taken by his new Master into the country where they can work undisturbed.
The standard - someone/thing is destroyed, killed/humiliated/lost face etc. and now must go off and train is nothing new. What is *new* is that you have never seen the kind of training done in this simple tale! These two are not Sifu and Student, they ARE monkeys! The training and practice of the Monkey Form will simply amaze you! The raw energy, the sheer strength and mind boggling positions will keep you glued to the screen! This is the best, bar none, movie devoted to the Monkey Form!!!
Buy it, don't bother with a rental you will want to watch this one again and again and again! |
