A good film spoiled by overly-long and excessively melodramatic rememberances. On the other hand, authentic sword choreography, intriguing plot, and the rival swordsmen's depth of characters redeem the film.

Collection: Top 30.

This film has a great story, but it is a little sappy for strict action fans. The swordplay is done in a very realistic way, which is what I prefer over the flying tiger wire bouncing. So if you want a good sword film that relies mostly on story and not really on special effects to move you, then I highly recommend it.

"When The Last Sword Is Drawn" is one of those must-see movies. If you're a fan of Yoji Yamada's "The Hidden Blade" or "Twilight Samurai", then this film is right for you. I didn't know much about this movie before I ordered it, but I am glad I did. Not only is the story and acting great" but the action is pretty good as well. There's not as much swordplay as you might want, but when the action starts you won't be disappointed. I also enjoyed Yojiro Takita's direction and the fell that he brought to this film. Once again, this is a must-see movie, whether you're into the samurai genre or not.

The story of the Shinsengumi has been the subject of many movies, TV series, comics, etc. I liked this version, which is from the perspective of a lesser known member (to me). The story is told by Saito who recalls fellow member Yoshimura and how the two became involved in the turbulent period of 1860s Japan where factional wars were about to split the country.
