Region: 0

Distributor: Red Sun

Chapters: 15

Picture: Despite some signs of age on the print (such as a few specks here and there), this is a relatively solid print. The marks on the print do detract slightly, but the colours are more sprightly than expected and there is a good level of detail present.

Sound: Mandarin soundtrack with English subtitles (removable). An average track for the age. Some moments sound tinny and lack the necessary power while other moments of dialogue have a slight echo.

Trailers: None.

Extras: The menu is in Japanese which makes navigation very difficult. The only 'extra' is a synopsis of the film in the said language.

Notes: This release has combined both the print and subtitles from a combination of the German and Japanese DVDs.

PanMedia is a distributor that made a few imported Chinese titles available in North America on budget priced DVDs in the late ‘90s, but I’d thought they’d disappeared until I discovered they were carrying on by repackaging imported region 0 Asian discs like this one, which are only available on some online retail outlets like the wonderful HKFlix.com. This isn’t the deluxe, Criterion-style treatment that King’s films ought to eventually receive, but though the print has a few speckles and damaged frames, it’s given a decent widescreen transfer. The translation is a bit sloppy in places, but the English subtitles are sharp and stay below the matte. There are no extras except some biographical essays on the all-Chinese menus. The back cover art has an English plot description pasted in that was taken verbatim from the Internet Movie Database summary written by Eduardo Casais.
