| Overview: | During the Spanish Civil War, an orphanage called Santa Lucia, run by a crippled headmistress and a mysterious professor, stands alone on a desolate plain. In its playground sits an undetonated bomb, which almost symbolizes the fact that the orphanage is headed for some ominous troubles close on the horizon. 12 year-old newcomer Carlos is abandoned there by his tutor/guardian while his father is away fighting the war. Though he is met with hostility and violence from a small group of boys, Carlos refuses to let them get the best of him. One night the ghost of Santi, a previous guest at the orphanage, appears to Carlos. His message is unclear, and Carlos soon learns that the other boys have seen or heard him, too, they all know him by his mournful sighs. With the outside world around them racked by war and tragedy, the orphanage troubled by a severe lack of funds and rations, and a few members of the staff who seem to have some devious plots in mind, there is nowhere for the boys to go. They must stick together and deal with the fate that awaits them, and the ghosts that beckon.
