| A typical American family sets out on a typical American family vacation in the typical American vehicle. Unfortunately the typical American vehicle breaks down in an absolute middle of nowhere desert environment. But wait--they are not alone. They are in terrible danger from a band of cannibals! Inbreds too! (Is being eaten by an inbred cannibal vs. a non-inbred cannibal better somehow?)
Yes this is an early Wes Craven flick. Yes it supposedly has a so-called "cult following", and yes they made another one. And it does seem to have fans who still watch the original although a more recent version has been made. The production values are of the economy brand. Of course people wander around alone when they are supposed to be staying together and all the other clichés of bad horror movies. There is definitely a degree of tension, but I felt it disappear when the movie became way too predictable. The cannibals (I mean inbred cannibals) were pretty frightening at first, but at times I was rooting for them!
It delivers enough gore and viciousness to suit most horror fans, but I just did not feel that tension that should keep you on the edge of their seat. About halfway into the movie it seemed to lose its way somewhat. The biggest fault of the film is the predictability of the characters. Better horror films are readily available. |
