The father of Kaiju, "Godzilla" is one of the best science fiction movies out there. The Japanese version, known as "Gojira", is by far the superior version of the film. The movie is a decidedly grim affair mirroring the horrors of war, which the Japanese audience would be very familiar with, seeing how this movie was made in 1954, a mere 9 years after World War 2. Born in the Cold War cauldron of atomic weapon stockpiles and the threat of total anhiliation, Gojira came to symbolize all that was evil about atomic weapons and still resonates today despite the passage of more than half a century.

"Gojira" is an epic monster movie that every movie fan should see. Although the original "Gojira" is significantly better, the American "Godzilla" is worth the view. I agree with the other review that it portrays the horrors of war better than most actual war movies. "Gojira" is awesome and the effects aren't that bad for a 1954 movie. Overall I loved it and couldn't recommend it enough. A definite must-own.

Here it is. THE Kaiju movie. I must say that the original "Gojira", is not only a great monster movie but an excellent movie, telling a story about the horrors of war better than most "legit" war movies.

Lest we forget, "Godzilla: King Of The Monsters" is almost as good. Some very creative work went into making it work for American audiences. It's almost a different movie and tells the same story from another view.

In any case. This is one of my favorite movies--one of the most moving of Kaiju films, and high-water mark for the genre.

Finally! My college-age kids were champing at the bit to see the original "Godzilla" after all these years. They had not seen the Americanized version for so long they'd forgotten it. Upon watching the original Japanese "Godzilla", their reaction was twofold. First, "What a great movie!" Second, "Why on Earth did Hollywood recut this film?"

You may think you've seen the original "Godzilla", but you haven't if you've not seen the original Japanese.
