| This DVD release of THE MAGIC BLADE from Aussie distributor Siren Visual is one of the first re-mastered releases to include an original English dub track but aside from including the excellent documentary HONG KONG CINEMA - WU XIA, which can be had elsewhere, this one isn’t worth getting anymore.
Unfortunately, Siren made the bad call of matching IVL’s previous release by leaving it non-anamorphic so that it doesn’t fill widescreen TVs. Picture quality is exactly the same as well, meaning that colors are slightly off and a portion of the original picture has been cut off on the sides.
Siren had a problem with their removable English subtitles on several other SB releases where the text appeared too faded but not this time. It’s a bright yellow which makes it very easy to read.
Thankfully, they ditched IVL’s poorly mastered 5.1 Mandarin track and stuck with the original two-channel Mandarin track. This is the track that purists will prefer although anyone who grew up watching English-dubbed kung fu movies in the ’70s and ’80s will definitely appreciate the familiar voice acting crew on the English dub. However, this English dub erases some of the film’s original soundtrack and effects.
Trailers - Five trailers for SB titles, including THE MAGIC BLADE are made available. These trailers are all ones that were produced by Celestial Pictures for their remastered reissues.
Hong Kong Cinema - Wu Xia (50 minutes) - This is an excellent 2003 documentary on China’s wuxia film genre that was originally produced for Discovery Channel International. For a complete review check out Cinema Hong Kong - Wu Xia.
