 | | | | Great film, with a good story and great action scenes! Kuo Chue is outstanding as the lead hero, and the beautiful Candy Wen is excellent as his love interest. I also enjoyed the performance of Lung Tien Hsiang. His wronged-avenger role reminds me that this guy can act and fight! Good movie for Kuo Chue fans! | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

| This is the best of the three wu xia films with the Venoms. Chang's direction of this otherwise complex wu xia novel is tight and pretty interesting.
Kwo Chui plays an orphan raised on the mountains by a revered swordsman and his mute servant. Fate brings him to discover a hidden treasure chest of the Golden Snake swordsman (Lung Thien Siang), whose skeleton is also found inside the cave with the chest, containing a snake-shaped sword and its training manual.
Having been trained a lot of swordsmanship, Kwo doesn't find it difficult to take up the new skills he has just discovered in the cave. Directed by the will left by the Golden Snake inside the chest, Kwo, feeling obliged and being an honorable swordsman, goes to a nearby town to solve the mystery of the Golden Snake's death.
After reaching town, Kwo gradually gets involved in the mystery and has to confront the Golden Snake's archenemy (played by Wang Li) and his clan members: a band of deviously skilled swordsmen: Lu Feng, Chiang Sen, Yu Thai Phing, and Chu Ke, two of whom are involved in the mystery.
The story has its twists and sub-plots common to a wu xia film, which add flavor to an otherwise cliched plot. Women characters played by Wen Shue Erl as the daughter of the Golden Snake, and Ching Li as his wife are also introduced to complicate the plot.
The final confrontation between Kwo Chui with Wang Li and his band of swordsmen is inevitable after the mystery is revealed. Being a just and honorable swordsman, Kwo Chui steps in the feud to settle the score for the Golden Snake, with his sword once and for all.
The one against five weapon-fights are of Venoms' quality- as we know Kwo Chui, Lu Feng and Chiang Sen choreographed them- The fights are few but exciting, most involving deft swordsplays and fight-in-the-air stunts. Watch how Kwo Chui takes on his five opponents and eliminates them !
All in all, this is worth collecting for Venoms' fans. |

| I really did enjoy this film. However I found myself cheering for the ‘bad’ guys over the supposed ‘good’ guys.
Lung Tien Hsiang plays a man hell bent on getting revenge when his family is massacred by a man who rapes the women then wipes out his whole family. He gets his revenge when he catches and kills the man responsible for the death of his family; a man who is a member of a very large family named Wen; but he is enraged and he decides that isn’t enough. He sends the body to the man’s family with a note that says that he will continue to seek revenge by murdering at least 50 members of that family and raping at least 10 of their women.
The Wen family starts losing members as they are repeatedly attacked by Lung Tien Hsiang, the women disappear and eventually the family gets word that they have been sold to brothels. This is where I get really lost, Ching Li is a part of the Wen family, but she has so much disgust for her family that she purposely puts herself out there to be kidnapped by the man seeking revenge. They never go into why she has such disgust for her family, they are just bad and we are to accept that. I mean they are obviously not angels, but what caused her to have so much hate for a family that is taking care of her?
Well she gets kidnapped and of course Lung Tien Hsiang decides he has had enough revenge and he tries to send her home, they are ambushed by the Wen family that is out looking for Ching Li. Lung Tien Hsiang gets injured and Ching Li stays to nurse him back to health, they fall in love and Ching Li is actually stupid enough to think her family can accept this man. They end up badly injuring him and he swears revenge.
Jump forward 19 years Kuo Chui has a chance meeting with Candy Wen, she takes him home and then we get to meet the Wen family. The patriarch is played by Wang Li, the elders are Lu Feng, Yu Tai Ping, Chu Ko, Ching Li and the younger members are Chiang Shieng and Candy Wen. Now there are a lot of people after Candy because she has stolen some gold and other clans are trying to get it back. Why she stole it is never explained except she wanted it so she took it. This results in a showdown at the Wen home where one of the guards loses his arm, (which is blamed on the people trying to get the gold back and not Candy who actually stole it and set everything in motion) the Wen family stands behind Candy 100%, yet for some reason they are dirt and she isn’t…whatever.
Eventually Kuo Chui kills all the men of the Wen family except Wang Li who is left with 1 leg. All of this to avenge Ching Li and Lung Tien Hsiang. This whole family wiped out and why? Because they took care of Ching Li and her daughter even though they knew the daughter was the product of a man who had killed many members of their family? I just can’t see them as the bad guys in this. I also can’t even begin to grasp how a woman can fall in love with a man who has raped and sold her sisters. I really like Candy Wen but her character in this film was annoying as heck, an 18 year old who throws herself on the ground, stomps her feet and cries…yeah, if you say so.
I really enjoyed this film though and yes most of the fight scenes were ‘feeling the other guy out’ type fights, but the incredible Venom physical ability and energy was there. Not to mention Kuo Chui was buff as ever and very pleasing to the eyes even though I couldn’t cheer for him as he wiped out this awesome family. |

| Although this does not have as much action as other Venoms films, the action that does happen makes up for it. Kuo Choi plays the hero once again while Lu Feng and Chiang Siang take on the villian roles.
Kuo Choi discovers the Golden Snake's weapons, manual, and map to his treasure. Fullfilling the promise to Golden Snake, he sets out to find a woman that is to receive a large sum of money. On the way, Kuo Choi befriends a lame attempt of a cross dressing woman, who obviously has the hots for Kuo Choi. How he finally realizes its a chick is perhaps the saddest attempt of revelation in martial arts movie history, lol. He of course gets caught up in the mix as his associated schoolmates are requesting the stolen money that the Five element Array fighters took. This also leads to some revelations with the cross dressing girl, her mom, the Five Element Array Fighters, Golden Snake, and how Kui Choi plays a part in it too. Despite how there are certain slow parts in the movie, when the action happens, its classic Venoms choreography as always. If you're a Venoms fan, add this to your collection! |

| There's a special thrill about seeing a Venoms movie for the first time. Sword Stained with Royal Blood is a weapon-based drama, so Lo Meng and Sun Chien are not in this movie. No matter. It's an excellent film that puts story first, builds character motivation and conflict that builds towards an action-filled resolution.
Kwok Chue's character is a noble child saved from a slaughter. From a young age, he has been trained in swordplay and hand-to-hand combat. By the time he is 18, he becomes caught between two feuding clans mixed up in a search for stolen gold. If he can find the gold, it will be given to the rural poor for their needs.
Without question, the strongest actor in this film is the clan matron. Her back story involving her affair with Golden Snake (I forget his name, but he played 'man in white' in Flag of Iron/Spearman) is a shining example of how to get viewers to identify with the characters. The actress that plays her son/daughter in disguise is a little annoying, but she fades into the background once her mothers story gets revealed. Kwok Chue's acting is excellent. Chiang Cheng and Lu Feng play younger members of the dishonorable clan, and are in fact supporting cast rather than co-stars. Wang Li plays the head of the dishonorable clan to great effect. The rest of the cast do the most with their roles.
The action scenes are excellent. The swordplay is incredibly fast, and some battles end violently. But for me, the story stands out as the strongest feature of Sword Stained with Royal Blood. It is confusing at first, but stick with it and the narrative all falls into place. Failing that, the fighting makes it worth the wait. Highly Recommended. |
