Ti Lung might have gotten tired of hearing how good he was in just about any part he was cast in, but I must say it again: Ti Lung is so good as Chi Ming Sing, a man torn between conscience and survival.

As for Fu Sheng, he shows real depth as Cheux Yi Fan, always keeping us off balance as to what his character has on his mind. Although Fu plays a few light moments, there is a burning behind his eyes that surprised me. Of course, he is just amazing to watch regardless of inner demons.

And Ku Feng--what a versatile great actor--is of course perfectly cast as Yo Si Hung. Wang Lung Wei is there too with a consistent solid performance and skills that probably get overlooked because of Ti Lung and other stars that he worked with.

Directed by Sun Chung, "Avenging Eagle" flies by its 92 minutes with great action, engaging drama, and moments of beauty. Great script by Ni Kuang.

Another great Shaw prodution starring Ti Lung and Fu Sheng. Ti Lung uses a three-section staff in this movie and uses it well and often. Fu Sheng has knives attached to his sleeves. There are many good fights in the movie and Fu Sheng and Ti Lung really shine. A good buy.

This movie is anything but predictable. If you are a fan of Ti Lung or Alexander Fu Sheng, you owe it to yourself to see this. Theres so much that goes on--great kung fu, and the story flows fantastically with the action. I didn't want the movie to end when it did! Flying knives, giant claw, double crossings, and great kung fu--check this one out!

Good quality kung fu movie. Ti Lung and Alexander Fu Sheng team up well together despite their different styles. Lung is the handsome quiet and serious character. Fu Sheng is the trickster always looking for a fight.

This movie was okay. I really expected a lot more from the villain. It was the story of a member of the Eagle Clan who escaped his group because he was tired of senseless killing. The Eagle Clan is after him to eliminate him for leaving.

This is the one that boosted Sun Chung's directorial fame that was later followed by THE KUNG FU INSTRUCTOR, THE DEADLY BREAKING SWORD, and HUMAN LANTERNS, to name a few.

It's always desirable to watch the charismatic Ti Lung in action and surprisingly also likeable to watch the comical Fu Sheng act soberly in this particular entry.

The other 12 eagles, unfortunately, are only given the usual bad-guy stereotypes which give very little to improve the plot.

Playing opposite the heroes are some "familiar faces" of the time: the ultimate Shaw Bros villain- Wang Lung Wei (as eagle no.1- the Vulture), Kao Siung (as eagle no.2- the Owl),Hui Thien Che (as eagle no.6- the Blue Eagle) and Ti Wei (as eagle no.7- the Red Eagle). The remaining eagles are Shaw Bros cameos.

One serious drawback in this film is Sun Chung's crude slow-motion technique he employed in a few fight scenes- jerky freeze frames- which reduces the intensity of the fights that would otherwise deliver more punch.

Despite the minor flaw, Tang Chia's fight choreo is tight, though not as intense as that of the Venoms', particularly in the final duel against the King Eagle.

The characters' weapon of choice is also unique, ranging from something cool like double wrist blades and a chained dagger to something weird like a smoking pipe !

AVENGING EAGLE is one of those Shaw Brothers wu xia flicks that definitely warrants repeat viewings. Highly recommended.

Sun Chung directs an outstanding old school classic, choreographed by Tang Chia. This film has great performances all around. Alexander Fu Shing trades in the naive role for a hard edged grim and gritty one. Ti Lung is outstanding as usual as a killer learning right from wrong. Ku Feng is at his villainous best. To me Ku Feng is on par with the villainous characters he portrayed in The New One Armed Swordsman and The Flying Guiolltine 2! Three of his greatest roles with this being the best!

"The Avenging Eagle" is a stylish old school masterpiece. The film has an excellent story with interesting writing, including many great twists and shockers. Director Suen Chung tells the story in a unique way using flashbacks, slow motion and freeze frame. The cinematography is absolutely breathtaking and the most stylish since “One Armed Swordsman" (1967). The kung fu action is above average, featuring weapons such as the three section staff, swords, knives, rings and more. There is a lot of jumping around but there is minimal use of wires. Ti Lung and Alexander Fu Sheng are great in the action scenes and perform just as well in the dramatic scenes. I've never been a big fan of Alexander Fu Sheng as a martial artist, but he impresses me here.

"The Avenging Eagle" is an extremely well crafted old school film and a definite must have!

Like Kung Fu Instructor this is another film with Ti Lung that has a lot of drama, though no shortage of action. The late Alexander Fu Sheng is in this one and helps Ti Lung fight off groups of assassins wielding a variety of exotic weapons. Perhaps most notable is that the dramatic content stands out more than the action. This is not a bad thing for this film because it keeps your interest even if you only care about the kung fu stuff. It's also one of the few kung fu films I didn't fast forward to fight scenes even though I've watched it over and over and instead, always watch it from beginning to end.

So "The Avenging Eagle" has a slightly convoluted way of telling its wonderfully over-the-top story. Problem?

Hell no! This film features some fantastic fights, expertly choreographed, and utilizes such unusual weapons as the hammer, rope-dart, double sleeve blade and the magnificently wielded three section staff.

Add to this the fact that the three main characters are played by Ti Lung, Alexander Fu Sheng and Guk Feng, and you have a balls to the wall action film with great actors and a wonderful '"two heroes each seeking revenge for their own reasons" plot.

An excellent martial drama, complete with betrayals, intrigues, love interest, mayhem and death! This film contained some classic man vs. himself conflict in the form of Ti Lung's developing self-awareness and conscience that I really enjoyed. Is a killer a killer always? Additionally, there was some tasteful cinematography that added some unexpected appeal. Fu Sheng and Ti Lung were excellent together. Commendable choreography, although not on par with the best of Liu-Chia Liang.

Based on HKFlix's recommendation, I purchased my first Shaw Brothers DVD. I really liked the story, but the martial arts were average. I guess I am used to the newer films, where the paces of the fights are faster. The story is of an escaped killer who had no desire to be a killer anymore and teams up with a stranger, who turns out to be the man he is looking for, to destroy his old master. Each batch of old allies, with their different weapons (Love the Hula Hoop of death) was fascinating. Based on this film, I will watch more Shaw Brother films; they remind me of why I started watching Kung Fu movies as a child.

If you own any Kung Fu movie, this is the one to own! Alexander Fu, Ti Lung, great weapons, fantastic battles, excellent story and great kung Fu action. What more could you ask for in a movie? This movie is an action-packed ride, with a great story and, dare I say, acting. Yes, I know no one buys a Shaw Brothers movie for the acting, but this movie keeps you glued even when they are not fighting.

This and "Kid With The Golden Arms" are the two best Shaw Brothers movies ever.

Rating, Out Of 5 Stars
Sun Chung isn't as well known as fellow Shaw Brothers kung-fu directors Chang Cheh and Liu Chia-Liang, but his films are equal to their best. In some ways, he combines the styles of the two directors, with Liu's mature sense of pacing and Chang's love of bloodshed and exotic weaponry. Sun also injects a little experimentation into the film, using still-shots and slow-motion to accentuate the action. This experimentation doesn't always work, but it's still nice to see someone pushing the envelope, even back in the old-school days.

Another unusual aspect of the film is the post-modern, out-of-order narrative. Like latter-day movies such as "Ashes of Time" and "Legend of the Wolf," Avenging Eagle jumps from the present to the past in a free spirit, as Ti Lung tells Fu Sheng about the various missions he and his fellow Eagles were sent on. The Eagles themselves each specialize in a different style or bizarre weapon, giving the movie an all-around comic-book vibe, which is all a guy could want from an old-school film.

Fu Sheng has the best weapon: he wears a pair of metal bracelets, which he can place along the soles of his boots. Hidden inside the soles are a pair of wicked blades, which attach to the bracelets, giving his character the nickname "Double Blade." Ti Lung fights with a three-section staff, which he uses to clobber just about anyone. Main villain Ku Feng, as the evil leader of the Eagles, fights with a pair of claw-like metal gloves.

Sun Chung adds some suspense into the film by clouding Fu Sheng's character in mystery. It isn't that big of a shock when we find out who he really is in the end, but I'm still not going to ruin it for the first-time viewer. Fu Sheng gets the best role, joking with his opponents right before he kills them. Ti Lung plays it more straight-laced as a guy trying to come to grips with the emotionless, cold-blooded killer he's been raised to become, and trying to start a new life for himself. And Ku Feng, as usual, takes it over the top (in a good way) as the maniacal master of the Eagle clan. There's a great scene at the end where he tries to turn Ti Lung against Fu Sheng.

Like most Shaw movies, there's more of a concentration on weapons-fighting than actual kung-fu combat. But the ferocity on display and the bloody deaths more than make up for any lack of martial arts. The fighting isn't as intricate as that of a Venoms movie, but Ti Lung's an old pro, and can hold his own. Fu Sheng throws some good moves too, but doesn't get to show off as much as he did in the superior "Chinatown Kid."

Just as good as the Venoms's best , Avenging Eagle proves that the Shaw Brothers were still at the top of their game, even toward the end of their movie-making empire. With its charismatic leading actors, witty rapport, hateful villains, and out-of-this-world weaponry, this one is a definite source of delight for the old-school kung-fu fan.

And if that isn't enough of an incentive to pick up a copy, I've even read that the DVD release is in pretty good quality, albeit full-frame and slightly cut (roughly 8 minutes have been excised from the DVD release, I've read, but I'm not sure what parts have been cut out, as I have an uncut, letterboxed copy of the movie on video. Don't get too jealous, though; the picture quality on my version sucks, and the audio's all out of whack).

This has long been one of my favorite martial arts movies. It has two of my favorite actors from the Shaw Brothers stable: Alexander Fu Sheng and Ti Lung. There is great chemistry between the two, the fights include many great battles with weapons, and the story is well done. For me, this ranks up there with Chang Cheh's best, and that is saying a lot...
