This is a collection of both old Japanese legends like the Peony Lantern, which has been done about a dozen times, and new urban legends like She-Bear, about a crazy woman who cuts off fingers, ears, and the like. Aside from the Peony Lantern, all the stories are original and really creative despite their short length. My favorite is She-Bear, it is really creepy and taps into our fear of the homeless. There was really only one I thought wasn't on par with the rest, but it was one of six that was predictable--even the Peony Lantern was done well. Think of them like short "Tales From The Crypt" episodes. If you liked "Tales From The Crypt", give these a try. |
