| A rather overhyped and messy semi-sequel to DRUNKEN MASTER--a movie I never found that great to begin with but was almost a masterpiece compared to this one. It is just a lot of bad comedy mixed with some Yuen clan weirdness, a slew of comedic fights that just drag on, and a few decent bouts, actually displaying some cool skills and intensity.
I've never bought Yuen Shun Yee as a leading man, nor did I this time. He is great as a villain, but that's about it. Yuen Siu Tin more or less reprises his role as beggar So here, and I actually find it slightly depressing and sad to see the ailing master heavily doubled in movie after movie from this era. His workload in the late 70's, was more than any man his age should have to endure, and eventually it killed him I guess.
Hwang Jang Lee as Rubberlegs is definitely the saving grace here, as he was in so many mediocre kung fu flicks from this time. He really gets to show his stuff in the end fight, that drunken mantis style is cool. I also liked Corey Yuen as Hwang's arrogant student, and Linda Lin Jing as the old lady, also seen in DRUNKEN MASTER.
But as a whole, those things combined was just not enough to redeem the movie in my mind; and in the end, I was left rather unimpressed. |

Hwang Jang Lee is the man and Sam Seed does his thing as usual. The unofficial sequel to "Drunken Master", this one features Simon Yuen returning as the rednosed scamp who just happens to be a top kung fu master. Not quite as brilliant as the original, but this movie still shines with great comedy, wince-inducing training sequences, and some bone jarring fight scenes. I loved the shapes by Corey and co. in this one. Hwang Jang Lee performed surprisingly well considering his trademark kicking style was absent--instead his version of Northern Mantis well and truly made up for this. A weird, yet awesome, movie that I consider to be the proper sequel to "Drunken Master," as opposed to Jackie Chan's sequel. Almost the entire cast and the director are included, all except Chan. Not much of a loss there, as Corey Yuen is a really charismatic hero and excellent martial artist--not to mention Wo Ping's choreography is top notch. Not as good as the original Drunken Master but it still features plenty of great fight scenes that any Wo Ping fan will enjoy. Great cast and some good slap stick humor. Most casual viewers will be interested in this film because of the venerable Simon Yuen's appearance, or perhaps for Yuen Woo Ping's excellent direction, but the reason to watch it, many, many times, is "Sunny" Yuen's amazing performance as his father's new son.
