Certainly not a film associated with the upper echelons of Cannibal films (nor the Italian horror genre), Amazonia (known as White Slave on US DVD) is both a slightly pleasant surprise, but not one that will leave much of a mark on your collection.

Directed by "Roy Garret" (Mario Gariazzo-of Play Motel infamy) and written by Mondo Cane nutjob Franco Prosperi, this follows the "real" trial of Catherine Miles, as she is accused of homicide while spending time in the jungle with a native tribe. Let's not forget though, that her parents get decapitated (and their heads held out to dry in front of her through the first part of the film), big sticks are put into little places (ouch) and far worse. The idea of this trial is silly, but hey...it makes for the structure of the film. So Catherine Miles (Elvire Audray-who also was in the charming Lenzi film, Ironmaster) is a pretty young rich girl, who's parents houseboat gets hopped by a tribe of wild jungle jumpers...and she survives thanks to the kindness of one native. Of course, how nice is that...she sees her parents decapitated...and gets lead into custody of the tribe. From there on out it's straightforward jungle adventure/exploitation, but with a bit harder edge than you might expect. Catherine gets naughty...big stick violation follows. A cripple shows kindness...into the spinning net for the pinyata treatment! Youch. As for the rest of the story, it unfolds pretty much as you would expect (I won't spoil Prosperi's witful words for you), being no better or worse than a basic exploitation film. What is interesting is that I enjoyed the flick so much. Perhaps I've been jonesin for a new ItaloJungle Movie...I've seen a bunch, and now I've seen another! I dug up an unwatched bigbox Jungle Master tape to make the experience complete. The pacing is pretty decent, never going into ho-hum mode as these affairs sometimes do. And the exploitation elements are there in full force. Loaded to the gills with nudity (is it just me, or are some of the native girls here really hot? Normally it's straight National Geographic...but not here, and Audray is EASY on my eyes.), sporadically gory (head slicings, and dart violence abounds), and with an interestingly mundane score, I found Amazonia a good 90 minutes. It's no classic (that is for damn sure), but not the worst thing I've watched all month.
