| Overview: | Professor Charles K. Kao: Father Of Fibre-Optics Communication
Branded a fool for years for his vision, Charles Kao's strong convictions eventually enabled him to create a miracle in telecommunications which has immeasurably improved the quality of our lives. Thanks to his invention, we nowadays think nothing of surfing the internet, sending and receiving email, enjoying crystal-clear telephone reception and cheap international calls. He is the recipient of countless awards, including the highest accolade in his field: the "Marconi International Fellowship", the engineering equivalent of the Nobel Prize.
Professor Yang Xiang-Zhong: Father of Cloned Cow
In 1997 Yang Xiang-Zhong took some cells from the ear of an aged cow well past its reproductive life to create the world's first cloned cow, Amy--a tremendous breakthrough in science and medicine which means that in the future, cloning technology can be used to treat diseases such as cancer and diabetes which arise from cells losing their natural functions. Despite being a sufferer of terminal cancer, Prof. Yang's spirit has not been shaken in the slightest--quite the contrary, it has impelled him to pick up speed on his research, in the hope that his "Dairy Cow Project" might enable peasant farmers in China to take the first steps down the road to prosperity.
