Francois Truffaut, one of the most widely acclaimed directors in the history of cinema, is also the most famous of the French New Wave directors. He made his name when he was awarded the Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival in 1959 for his first feature film, "The 400 Blows". This semi-autobiographical film begins the life of the character Antoine Doinel, who soon became an icon of French cinema when Truffaut went on to make "Antoine and Colette", "Stolen Kisses", "Bed and Board" and "Love on the Run" to complete the "The Antoine Doinel Adventure". Truffaut used his own experiences and memories from his childhood, and used the "camera-as-pen" style to write his own film. As Andrew Sarris has said, "Truffaut, like Antoine, then and always, is a fool for love".
