Plot:	A military commander conscripts a pregnant woman. After she gives birth to a boy, he claims the child and leaves her alone in the desert. Unexpectedly, she follows the soldiers to take care of her son. Her bravery eventually earns her return of her son.
Overview:	"Journey To The Western Xia Empire" is the directorial debut of Lu Wei, who co-wrote the historical drama "Farewell My Concubine" for Chen Kaige. This epic set in medieval China tells the story of a mother searching for her infant, who was kidnapped by warriors. Collecting a blood tax in the form of human life, soldiers sent to a village by the emperor collect ten male babies to be trained as warriors. After losing one of the boys, the commander conscripts a pregnant woman. After she gives birth to a boy, he claims the child and leaves her alone in the desert. Unexpectedly, she follows the soldiers to take care of her son, earning her the respect of the commander who finally risks his own life and honor to return her son to her.
