In a mountain hamlet in eastern China, a poor woman faces trial after trial--sold into marriage as a child, left a young widow, enslaved by her mother-in-law... When the New Year comes, can this poor woman find any hope in this society?
Overview:
"New Year Sacrifice" (1956) has been noted in many polls as one of the 100 greatest Chinese films of all time. Based on the short story by prolific Chinese author Lu Xun, "New Year Sacrifice" is the first film to successfully transfer a work by one of China's foremost contemporary writers to the screen. The story takes place in the years just before and after the Revolution of 1911, when the Qing Dynasty was overthrown. In a mountain hamlet in eastern China, a poor woman faces trial after trial. Sold into marriage as a child, she is left a young widow and enslaved by her mother-in-law, who sells her to a poor peasant. Her second marriage turns out to be happy until fate takes away her husband and son. Now seen as a bearer of bad luck, she becomes a social outcast. When the New Year comes, can this poor woman find any hope in this society?
"New Year Sacrifice" succeeds so well due in part to the fine acting by Bai Yang as Mrs. Xianglin. Bai Yang is one of China's greatest leading ladies, "Crossroads" and "The Spring River Flows East", two pre-Liberation classics, are among her numerous screen credits.
