ALTERNATE SYNOPSIS:
In post-Soviet Russia, nothing is as it seems. When members of the Russian Mafia pose as KGB agents to steal a nuclear missile, the CIA calls on martial arts Master Jackie Chan to stop them. Jackie treks the globe-from icy glaciers of the Ukraine to the pristine beaches of Australia-traveling by submarines, stilts and snowboards, encountering man-eating sharks and heart-stopping beauties.

In the air, on the ground, and underwater the stunts are real! There are no stand-ins! No stunt doubles! Chan's authentic action and hilarious heroics make JACKIE CHAN'S FIRST STRIKE one of the most exciting, fun and unique film experiences you'll ever have.

Chan continues with the popular Kevin Chan character. This time, he's enlisted (for some unspecified reason) to work for the CIA to track down an arms smuggler. Of course, in true Chan tradition, everything quickly gets fouled up and everyone thinks he's a double agent. He must work to both clear his name and save the world from terrorists.

The plot, even in the uncut Hong Kong version, is ridiculous -- most of the plot exposition was cut for the US release, so if you're watching that version, you're going to be even more lost as to exactly what the hell's going on. The acting (or dubbing in the US version) is atrocious, but there's plenty of action and stuntwork, including a phenomenal sequence where Chan uses a steel ladder to beat up a gang of bad guys. The movie is also quite funny in bits, such as where Chan has to go around in a stupid-looking penguin outfit and sing oldies. Not Chan's best by any means (especially after Police Story 3's manic pairing with Michelle Yeoh), but still should please most fans of Chan.

This movie wants to be a James Bond film so bad that Jackie even says "I feel like I'm James Bond except without the beautiful women" at one point in the film. (and speaking of beautiful women, Maggie Cheung did not reprise her role for this film) A lot like "Supercop" in that the action pieces are more important than the martial arts brawling, but there are a couple of outstanding fights - one in particular where Jackie is forced to use a ladder to defend himself. Amazing! (it also looks like Jean Claude Van Damme may have borrowed the stilt fight idea for his film, "The Quest") The final showdown in the aquarium is unbelievable as he fights off thugs underwater with big nasty sharks swimming all around them. Of course, some of the sharks were fake, but most of them WERE REAL! (or at least EXTREMELY convincing) Beautiful photography and scenery add a lot to the film. Overall, an exciting and enjoyable film - much better than his last two efforts ("Rumble In The Bronx" and "Thunderbolt").

The U.S. release is definitely palatable, but it trims down the shark sequences (the ones with the real sharks) and unfortunately leaves out a couple of extremely funny bits.
