Miike may have made at least a half a dozen better films - perhaps many more than that - but this is a perversely entertaining introduction to one corner of his oeuvre - the depiction of violence as comedy: It is much more easily digestible than such extremities as "Ichi the Killer," which is savagely violent and serio-comic, and "Audition," which is predominantly serious. The hero is pathetic and likeable at the same time. |
