Two young lovers are forced to part when the girl's father falls into debt and sells her to a wealthy widow in central Bangkok. She returns two years later, to find herself torn between love and duty.
Overview:
Based on Mai Muang Doem's classic Thai novel, Plae Kao, Kwan-Riam is the second film adaptation of the famous book, directed by a first-time filmmaker, former film critic Suthakorn Santithawat. The film is set in the year 1939, in Bangkok. Kwan and Riam are two young lovers living in a small suburb, happy despite the fact that their fathers are enemies. They are forced to part when Riam's father falls into debt and sells her to a wealthy widow in central Bangkok. The forced separation is hard on both of them, who have pledged eternal love, and it becomes harder when the widow, who loves Riam, wants her to marry her nephew, Somchai. Riam returns to her village when her mother dies, and is torn between her love for Kwan and her loyalties to her benefactor. But Kwan is convinced Riam has already made her decision, and takes drastic steps with serious consequences.
