| Overview: | A tragic-romantic tale as well as a political allegory of Hong Kong in transition, the story sets on the eve of the Japanese invasion in 1941. Ha Yuk-Nam is the daughter of a rice distributor. In her father's shop there is a part-time coolie, Yip Kim-Fay; and a temperatmental but honest young worker, Wong Hak-Keung. The three young people soon become close friends. Hak-Keung is in love with Yuk-Nam and wants to marry her. Yet Yuk-Nam's father opposes the marriage because Hak-Keung is a penniless worker. The young couple soon decide to flee to Mainland China with Kim-Fay. The trouble is, they'll have to make it out before the Japanese invade Hong Kong...
