The Blade All Content Used With Permission. ![]() This is a good remake of "The One-Armed Swordsman". Tsui Hark's adaptation just seems fresh and new. The style is nice and the action is really great. I enjoyed this picture a lot. -Black Belt Ninja (see my profile) ![]() Very strange movie. ![]() ![]() Superb remake of "The One-Armed Swordsman" by Tsui Hark. Highly recommended! ![]() This is an awesome swordplay movie that is both cruel and beautiful. It's a remake of the classic "The One Armed Swordsman" from 1967. Both written and directed by Tsui Hark with Chiu Man Cheuk--who I thought would be the next big superstar of martial arts movies, but he went from movies to TV which kinda' sucks because I think he is a great martial artist and a good screen fighter. SEE THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY.

![]() Like many Tsui Hark films, this is an imbalanced mess from a strictly narrative point of view. Also like much of his work, however, "The Blade" adds up to somewhat more than the sum of its parts. Several of the main characters are unsympathetic at best; the storyline meanders all over, with scant overall structure; the narrative framing by the young girl adds little more than ridiculous and pretentious "epicness"; yet the movie remains one of the most memorable HK martial arts films of the '90s and one of Tsui Hark's most important. Action scenes are few but visceral and involving. The training montage is excitingly original. The male performances are excellent (the female leads less so), and the film's overall setting is rough, gritty, and ultimately groundbreaking. The film's flaws are manifold. Despite that, it's hard not to strongly recommend it to any fan of HK action cinema. ![]() ![]() a bit over rate film, fight is bit hard to see!
![]() Gritty and dark, this film...is one of my favorite movies. ![]() Tsui Hark is a great director when he has the right material. Mr. Hark does an incredible job in "The Blade", which is actually a loose remake of "The One-Armed Swordsman". "The Blade" has excellent fight scenes and a wonderful epic feeling story.
![]() Great movie. Rather violent, but a good story well told. ![]() The movie gets better the more you watch it. Vincent Zhou is good looking and a great actor. Most of his movies are worth watching. ![]() Pretty good movie! Thought the storyline was a little unclear. -JTRagic (see my profile) ![]() The reason or reasons I'm giving this one star was due to the plot of revenge I understood, but the in-between desolation, sex, and debauchery was not appealing at all. The action scenes were fine, but that is bascially the only reason for purchasing this film. ![]() Great remake of Shaw Bros.original. ![]() Great remake of "One-Armed Swordsman", in a gritty, dirty, believable historic setting. This is one of my favorite Tsui Hark movies - the action is great, the drama moving, and the cinematography sweeping. I waited many years for a subtitled DVD to be released to replace my well worn VHS copy. Well worth a watch. ![]() This in no way resembles the Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung comedy kung fu that seems to make up the bulk of my collection. Very good, almost artsy action drama with a far darker, more serious, hopeless tone edging into "Dog Bite Dog" territory. The action is brutally feral and realistic and completely without any noticeable use of wires, etc. The classic "One Armed Swordsman" revenge story is solid, the acting is good all around, and Chiu Man Cheuk makes a great lead. Recommended! ![]() I love this remake of "The One-Armed Swordsman" by Tsui Hark. It has a great story and excellent action, the cast are all very good. If you are a fan of Tsui Hark's, this one is a must! ![]() This is super cool! Also, it's not easy to get your hands on a copy of this DVD anywhere else. I had see this after I listened to the commentary on the Dragon Dynasty DVD of "One-Armed Swordsman". Get both, compare and contrast, you won't be disappointed. ![]()
![]() A dark and whirling maelstrom of martial violence. Vincent Zhao should've been a bigger star based on this performance. Tsui Hark's best film IMO. ![]()
![]() Watching "The Blade" was a hallucinatory experience. This film is all over the place: frenetic, kinetic, surreal, etc. Ultimately, you come out of the whole experience dazed and definitely spent. To be honest, this film strays pretty far from "The One-Armed Swordsman" so as to not truly qualify as a "remake". Tsui Hark has crafted something totally unique, certainly from a visual standpoint. This is so far ahead of anything else happening in 1995, that it may as well be on another planet. My only complaint is that some of the fight sequences are so sped-up that it seems rather a waste. Overall this grim, dark, and twisted version of the One-Armed Swordsman is required viewing for all wuxia fans, and fans of Tsui Hark's worldview, in particular. ![]() ![]() ![]() Great story and tremendous action. This is a must-see movie for martial arts fans. Highly recommended. -William Giordanella (see my profile) ![]() The greatest Tsui Hark film. The final fight scene is the best fight scene ever made. The story is really good. ![]() Good movie. May have started out a little slow, but was definitely worth the fight scenes that evolved. ![]() I was a bit disappointed with this film because of the pacing of the action and the uneven scenario. The action is hard to explain--it's very fast and it's difficult to clearly see the choreography. But there is something special about the flick, there is a lot of talent in this movie. ![]() I caught this movie at a Hong Kong film fest in the 90's. I really dug it. I bought the Jimmy Wang Yu "One Armed Swordsman" box set plus "One Armed Boxer" films while searching for the one I'd seen in the theater. I really enjoyed those of course, but still couldn't find Tsui Hark's "One Armed Swordsman." Little did I know it was simply called "The Blade." Thanks HKFlix for helping me find it! ![]() Probably Tsui Hark's greatest film, along with "Seven Swords". Great fight scenes and plenty of power and emotion in the story. ![]() An amazing storyline and top notch action [when there was action]. I would've rated this movie higher if there was a little more martial arts action. One major fight scene isn't enough for a kung fu movie. -Johnnie Freeze (see my profile) ![]() Awesome "re-imagining" that has very few things in common with the original film. And those elements that are the same look and feel so completely different that you forget you've seen it before. With the trademark of Tsui Hark's amped up action, cool set design and appropriately dirty/clean cinematography and Wing Zhao proving a worthy successor to Wang Yu, "The Blade" is a must have for any Fu-Fan that you will watch more than twice! -Lex Talionis AKA The New "#6" (see my profile) ![]()
![]() ![]() A very rare and hard to find film. Simple martial arts story with superb sword fighting technique. A better movie than Shaw Brothers' classic "One Armed Swordsman". ![]() ![]() Simply AMAZING!!! ![]() This is my favorite Tsui Hark film! I love all his movies, even "Black Mask 2" (I know, I have no taste in movies). The fights were excellent, the cinematography is really good, and the story is good (yet a bit confusing)! ![]()
![]() -JL29927 (see my profile) ![]() ![]() Unbelievable movie. Not non-stop action, but still one of my favorite martial arts movies. Tsui Hark (director) is a genius. Vincent Zhao and Hung Yan Yan are great. ![]() ![]() Loved the action. It was a bit choppy...so it was a little difficult to follow. But the action alone rates 4 stars. ![]() I think this is one of the worst films I've ever seen. The story is...ok. But still there is nothing good about this movie, the costumes are raggedy like they stole it from some homeless bums, most of the characters are ugly which makes it unbearable to even keep on watching all the drama. And the action...this movie shouldn't even be considered a martial arts/kung-fu/swordplay film. I mean, come on now, who would call all that 'animal-like rage with a blade' martial arts? It's not art...there's nothing beautiful about this film. I wouldn't waste time buying it for those who are into the real martial arts like Jet Li and Jackie Chan. Tsui Hark was probably in a psycho wasteland while making this film...
![]() Simply a must-have! One of the best! For all Chinese HK martial arts movie fan, among my 185 DVDs, it is definitely in my top 8 best ever Chinese movies! I'll say "The BLADE" with Jet Li's OUATIC series (Tsui Hark again), "Dragon Inn", "Iron Monkey", "Fist Of Legend", "The Killer", "Bullet In The Head", and "Drunken Master 2". This film is incredible; it makes me cry at the end when Ling is talking about them visiting her sometimes. ![]() I was actually a member of the team which dubbed this film into English, so I've seen it quite a few times (fortunately or not, the English track has not been released on DVD); words cannot recommend this magnificent film highly enough. This film and others like it established Tsui Hark's reputation as an innovator in an industry weighed down by decades of convention. Buy it! ![]() No reviews for this yet? Hell, I've got to let people know, this is a super cool movie. The plot is a bit confusing and a little under written, but emotionally very powerful. It's an updating of THE ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN starring Chiu Man Cheuk (Wong Fei Hung in ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA 4 and 5). The martial arts are filmed with a lot of fast editing and wire tricks, and though I normally prefer my kung fu straight up, they really pulled off some amazing stuff. The tone of the film is very dark, and there's some really gruesome stuff in here. Personally, I think this is the best role the star has ever played, and one of my favorite films by director Tsui Hark. The villain is Clubfoot from ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA 3, here playing a character called Flying Dragon. It's really a visual treat, and the kung fu is exciting. Highly recommended. -Kung Fu Bob
