| A film about a ninja who travels to China from Japan to seek revenge against a ninja master for the death of his father.
The story for this film was great but it contains two fundamental flaws. Of course, the first flaw is insignificant and that is the Chinese comedy implemented in the story which is something I don't really pay attention to. The second flaw, however, is more potent. It pertains to the silly magical kung fu garbage about 2/5 of the way of the film and at the end of the film. It ruined the story for me; and normally I favor absurdities, but this was one of few times I did not want to see asinine left-field shit. But at least that portion of the film was barely existent and martial arts action did make up for the incoherence.
Speaking of which, the martial arts action was great. Conan is someone whom I'm not familiar with, but he does have potential. Hiroyuki Sanada, on the other hand, I'm familiar with, mostly with Sonny Chiba films. He is an excellent martial arts performer and in my mind probably the best person to be utilized as a ninja character in film. And yes, considering this is a martial arts comedy, you may have to put up with some kung-foolery in this film, but overall the action is wonderful.
Despite a little incoherence in the story, it still remains to be an excellent martial arts film and I'm glad to see that a Japanese man portrayed the role as ninja in this film, giving this film a much more authentic ethnicity. |

| This awesome old school classic has the distinct honor of being my all time favourite ninja flick, and one of the most vivid movie memories of my childhood. That super cool opening with all the ninjas running around displaying their skills is etched into my brain for all eternity, and so is that cheesy 80's theme tune. It is also, quite embarrassingly, the only song that I know all the words to... THEY WERE READY TO FIIIGHT.. SHAKA NINJAAA...! Okay, enough of that. Just be glad that you can't hear my voice through the screen.
But seriously, this is in my opinion the best of the old school HK ninja movies, alongside FIVE ELEMENT NINJAS and DUEL TO THE DEATH. It has just the right amount of cheese and comedy, balanced well with the fairly serious storyline and awesome action. The choreography by director Yuen Kwai and Meng Hoi is super tight, and shows the various styles on display to their full extent. Conan Lee and Hiroyuki Sanada rarely looked better than they do here. Too bad that Sanada didn't do more HK movies, and that Conan turned out to be an egomaniacal ass, ruining his own career.
I'll admit that the whole thing kind of unravels towards the end. After the awesome pagoda showdown, there really wasn't anywhere for the movie to go. So what do you do? You bring out the big guns, in the form of grandmaster Hwang Jang Lee of course. He is sort of played for laughs here, but still brings the thunder and caps off the film nicely, despite his slightly cartoonish sendoff.
So, in closing, an all time favourite classic of mine that delivers the goods, as well as the bitter sweet sting of nostalgia, for me personally. So if you haven't seen it, and are going by this review, deduct that last half star, that is strictly for the memories. |

 | | | | This is a good ninja kung fu flick that was cheesy, but not as cheesy as many other flicks that came out around its time. Conan Lee however is obviously a Jackie Chan rip-off but delivers his fight scenes really well. Henry Sanada, Sonny Chiba's protege, is also great, and I've always been a fan of his films. The fights in this film are well put together, but there are too many moments that become too weird and cheesy. Basically "Ninja In The Dragon's Den" is an underrated and rare ninja kung fu flick that delivers the goods. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | It only deserves 2 stars for the actors (Conan and Sanada) another half for the presence of Hwang Jang Lee because he only appears at the end. That's it! Not worthwhile! | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Great stuff! Corey Yuen does it again with his grade-A choreography. Doesn't get much better than this one for true martial arts fans. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | It's a good movie, especially the Chinese/Japanese team-up. I noticed the ninja was a Japanese actor played in a Sonny Chiba movie. Also Jackie Chan was behind this movie. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | A must-have if you dig the old Chinese vs. Japanese set-up used in classics like "Shaolin Challenges Ninja", "Duel To The Death", etc. Corey Yuen choreographs some of the fiercest f-ing fights Henry Sanada's ever filmed, and he kicks Conan Lee's diva-punk-bitch-ass all day long. Well worth the price of admission. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Slow start (although the stilt fight is good fun), but once this gets going, it never lets up. Great performances from Conan Lee and especially Hiroyuki Sanada, along with some cracking fights, combined with a stupid, yet funky, title song, make this a must-see.
Hwang Jang Lee's slightly unexpected cameo as the end villain has been described as a touch unnecessary, coming after an excellent battle between our two heroes, but what the hell, it's the great Hwang Jang Lee! How can that be a bad thing?
Also, note the incredibly long full-body burn stunt into a flaming pool. Jaw-dropping, whilst at the same time somewhat worrying. Not too sure safety standards were in practice back then... | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | The best ninjitsu movie ever! Highlights martial arts scenes from feudal Japan and China. Very good title music track. This movie has a poetry. You must have this DVD in your archives if you are fan of martial arts and ninjitsu. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |
