| Possibly the ultimate Brucesploitation movie, a movie that actually exploited Bruce Lee rather than just his name. This was probably a really bad idea from the get go. Betty Ting Pei was already reviled for having Bruce Lee die in her bedroom and this really put the last nail in her coffin by making a movie about it, thus profiting from his death in the eyes of the devotees of Bruce Lee like some vampy ghoul would forever haunt her.
But it is kinda' interesting in a strange way, it's like a behind-the-scenes kung fu soap opera that has enough fighting to keep you interested and a few utterly daffy scenes to make the movie stand out, including one of the two of them throwing pillows around while they bounce on a bed. The movie is cheap and exploitative, but neither of those are immediately bad qualities for a film. Granted it doesn't paint Bruce Lee in a glorious light, what with the drug taking and affair having, but it's perhaps not entirely false.
A movie that has its fair share of people who wish it to disappear into a black hole, it is a way unique, strange, and amusingly melodramatic. I'm not going to say I loved it, but I can't really say I abjectly hated it either. |
