 | | | | The first time I saw "Battle Royale", I was a little sick by the end. The sight of high school children forced to kill each other in increasingly brutal ways left me cold and a little depressed, but that should not put a viwer off this film. I have watched it several times since, and really do think it is an exceptional movie. The director manages to take several child actors, and unfolds a tale that swings from brutal violence, to genuinely heart-warming moments of friendship and affection.
It is very difficult to pay tribute to "Battle Royale". Despite the touchy subject matter, the film really is best seen as social commentary. How dos the 21st century handle increasingly unruly gangs of teenagers who refuse to conform, learn, or grow? The human story told here is worthy of my highest praise as these children face the challenges of survival, adaptation, ethics, and pain. | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | i totally agree with you,the film is exceptional. | kung fu kid | | Y | Very well said. | | | | This movie was...interesting, to say the least. It seems to be a movie of stylistic extremes. For every well-executed gunshot/crossbow hit, etc., there's a terrible blood-knife swipe. Every harrowing, tension-soaked kill scene is immediately followed by a sappy but-I-loved-you-all-along dramafest. While the premise of the Battle Royale tournament is intriguing, the story around it seems tacked on and convoluted. The ending was also highly anticlimactic and really killed the movie for me. Worth a rental for the gore and tension, but you won't be watching it again. | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | N | I may of watched this movie more times than any other in history and still enjoy it especially when i'm drunk. | AH1706 | | N | It may be that this film hasn't aged well for certain viewers. | | | | One of the best action-thrillers out there. The idea of a dystopian future is getting pounded to death these days, but this movie sets up the premise and really delivers the goods. | Where do I begin with this masterpiece? This movie has the best opening sequence I have ever seen to date. Even the music that plays at the very beginning, a symphonic, operatic, horrific, melodious tone, pefectly sets the mood for what the audience is about to experience.
The movie is so good, it will keep you guessing until the very end. Kinji Fukasaku keeps the pace moving quickly, while the characters in the movie interacts, giving us just enough information about each one of them. Subtle, yet brilliant scriptwriting. Add to that a superb cast.
They really look like the kids they portray--which is more painful when you see them killing each other, playing the game they are all forced to play.
It basically sets a new standard in depicting violence in the movies. Fear, tension, betrayal, chaos, and nail biting suspense. Not to mention loud screams, sighs of painful gestures, and someone saying "Damn, that must've hurt!", while watching BATTLE ROYALE. As mentioned above, the movie opens with an operatic piece as the Toei Pictures logo opens the movie. A prologue explains that by the dawn of the millennium, the nation collapsed.
85% of the population were out work, and at only 15% employment, the youths started boycotting school and causing widespread havoc. The adults, fearing the youths, prompted to pass a reform act to set the youths straight, deliquent or otherwise. Hence, the new law is called "The Millennium Educational Reform Act", a.k.a "The B R act", a.k.a " Battle Royale."
One of the elements I enjoyed in viewing BR, especially for the first time, is its use of classical music. I mean it's the exact irony of it all that makes it all the more interesting and enjoyable. Where else can you see two young students fighting to the death while listening to Bach's Air for a G string? Fukasaku-san's mind is twisted, and beautiful. Another element is the use of comedy and dark humor.
As I watched Kitano-san, (played wonderfully with disturbing delight by Takeshi Kitano) as he tells these kids that their very lives are threatened, Kitano-san explains it in such a vicious, and yet hilarious, way. The whole movie pretty much takes place on a deserted island, where the unfortunate students were taken after their abduction.
There aren't a whole lot of negative things to mention about BR's production standards, except maybe for its plot holes, although I can mention a couple, it will not hurt the premise of the storyline one bit. At least to me anwyay. In fact, you will be so totally absorbed in the movie you won't even notice it. As you will pretty much be biting your nails among other things, for you will be totally enraptured by its cringingly painful death scenes of young Japanese 9th graders.
But by no means should you watch this masterpiece just because of its controversial premise, that's just the icing on the cake. It should be watched for its energizing direction, its arresting formula that will horrify and entertain the viewer. The pace of the movie moves at such a mathematical precision that it will keep you in awe, as you are captivated by the ordeals of the characters and the horror they are experiencing.
You will find yourselves cheering for your favorite characters, as they endure obstacle after obstacle. And, sadistic though it may sound, these are 9th graders we are watching after all as they kill each other off. You will be treated to one of the most spectacular, most talked about, and most contoversial films ever made, by any film company. Do yourself a favor, do not pass this one up. This is the movie for the ages. The most shocking, as it is disturbing.
In conclusion, BATTLE ROYALE is without a doubt a definitive cult classic in Japanese Cinema. Just as Miike's DEAD OR ALIVE messed with your senses on its opening credits, so does BATTLE ROYALE in its entire 114 minutes of running time. Fukasaku-san has definitely made his mark in shock cinema, and BATTLE ROYALE is that mark.
I have never seen a movie that totally changed my whole perspective towards Japanese filmmaking. It's because of these type of flicks that I enjoy and love Asian cinema. No other film has ever made an indelible mark on my mind, and I have yet to see another movie that will do so. In short, no one should miss viewing the testament of Fukasaku-san's movie career, the Japanese movie masterpiece that is BATTLE ROYALE. |

 | | | | Pretty weird concept--adults getting "troublesome" teenagers to kill each other off, thereby theoretically making the world safer!? Sort of a nihilistic "Survivor". | | | | "Battle Royale" is an amazing movie where 42 school students are pushed into a game to kill each other; the last one standing wins. The winner is given a great gift: the ability to leave with their life. The game starts with each student given a backpack and inside are food, water, a map, and a random weapon. The effects are awesome and the story is incredible--brutal one minute and lovable and torching the next. Can you trust the people that you fight to survive? | Hold onto your hats, sports fans, and try and keep your knickers dry. We have an excellent treat here for all you film lovers. This is one of those movies that can either make or break your Asian film collection. If you don't own it, stop reading right now and purchase the shit. I'll be here when you get back. Now, for the rest of you folks that still aren't sure, "Battle Royale" is monumental entertainment. It combines a deeply probing psychological survey on the effects of extraordinary stress and survival/primal extincts that manifest under extreme (and shady) circumstances in the under-developed minds of children--as well as the media-frenzied constantly escalating bloodlust. Don't be mistaken, folks, this is a story that could one day take place in our world and possibly during our lifetimes. "Battle Royale" draws from many themes of film, books, and short stories that came before it, but it molds these themes into something that winds up feeling truly original. Raw, graphic violence is mixed with stirring emotion and remarkable performances for maximum effect. While I have not read the book, I have every intention of doing so because this story holds the boldness and potency of the classics of literature such as "I Am Legend" (survival against odds),"1984" (society's dystopian circumstances) or even the "Hagakure" ("The Way of the Samurai is in desperateness...Simply become insane and desperate."-page 45 1983 ed. paperback). The film is powerful on so many levels. I did read the entire 15 volume manga though and that rocks, so you should probably go get that too. Now, understand that you will cringe a few times during your first viewing because the action is so raw and the kids are young; so this may provide slight sensory overload, but you'll get over it. You're a big kid now. This movie was everything that "A Clockwork Orange" tried to be. I personally think that Stanley Kubric failed to capture the emotional content of the book I keep hearing about (never read that book either). While one of my dudes on this site does hold that film in high regard I can't help but feel that it came off as meaningless whereas this film ("Battle Royale") comes off as profound and powerful.
If you don't have it, I would give it my highest recommendation; and if you do have it, you should probably watch it at least once every year to keep good company with a well crafted story. Thanks for the time, campers, I got to peel. |

 | | | | Having recently re-purchased my copy of B.R. I'd almost forgotten how much I enjoyed this film. A cross between "Lord of the Flies" and "A Clockwork Orange". Director Kinji Fukasaku uses well known pieces of classical music for a great dramatic punch, while allowing the actors to go over-the-top at times, keeping in touch with the hard, satirical edge of the film. I would highly recommend it to anyone curious about Japanese cinema in general, or fans of exploitation movies. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Battle Royale is an innovative stressful film. The only drawback is the impersonality of the film versus the novel. The film affords you the opportunity to see several characters lives and experience their deaths. The novel brings you into every life, even if briefly, and you experience every death. All in all....it is an excellent film. One everyone should experience at least once. Then decide for yourself. But...please, don't wait for the American version. | | | | I just got the special edition of Battle Royale shipped to me and I must say it is one of the best movies I've ever seen. The acting by the surprisingly young cast was great and the special effects were amazing. Unfortunately the movie has a fault. As a huge fan of the book I was very surprised that they cut out the 20 page car chase that climaxed the book. The movie did have great action scenes but seeing the car chase would have made the film perfect. If you haven't read the book then the exclusion of this scene won't effect your opinion. For people who have read the book 4/5. For people who haven't 5/5. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

| 'Battle Royale' is, in my opinion, one of the only movies I have ever watched that I beleive I can't honestly give critisism on.
I, as a rule, don't usually think much of violent films, however the killing game around which this unforgettable story takes place is merely a backdrop upon which the real drama takes place.
Friendships are formed amidst adversity, and lost amidst betrayal. Anxiety and the basic need to survive drive many of the classmates to unimaginable odds, and the most timid of personalities become the most unforgettable characters.
There is essentially a sense of compassion to be felt for each and every student as they meet their ends at the hands of people they may have once trusted or befriended, and the glimpses into the past events that make them who they are.
The one key device I found most striking in the film was the use of the character of Kiriyama. Possessed of a one-track mind, his presence denotes the very fear the students are facing manifested into the form of a seemingly emotionless, mad and driven force of sadistic destruction. Masanobu Ando definitely has my commendations for his rendition of the character. Though he possesses no dialogue, his character is conveyed well through ruthless action and expression.
All plot points aside, Battle Royale is a striking film with a message and a meaning that I personally beleive deserves watching. Eye-opening and shocking from the very beginning, the ideas and meanings within the film and the director's intent are ones that struck me.
A movie that can easily be watched again and again through the sheer integrity of its story as opposed to the violent nature of its plot. |

 | | | | Very excellent film. [All the other reviews] have outlined the contents already so I won't waste my time. I am a little disapointed in the review of Peter A Martin. The film was not about warning young people to not trust adults, it was about who are your real friends in life... It really makes you look around at your friends and think: what if I was in that situation with them? Would they shoot me in the back? The film's message is clear, it's about who your true friends are. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

| With the U.S. re-make of Ringu (1998) being tossed onto North American rental markets, I wonder how long in this post-Columbine era it will take before they make “...the movie that Hollywood can never re-make...” Battle Royale has been rumoured to be pulled from Japanese theatres?, The film “...prompted politcial leaders to call for stricter controls on violence in Japanese entertainment...” This controversial movie is a cross between Lord of the Flies (1963); (1990), and reality television shows such as Survivor (1999). Japan is at the brink of collapse. The country is in a state of chaos, and violence by rebellious teenagers is completely out of control. The government takes busloads of students to an abandoned island to fight each other to the death in order to create a deterrent to others. The battle lasts for three days, and each student receives food, water, and a survival item; such as a gun or crossbow. Some unlucky students receive a compass or rope. Only one student is allowed to survive, everyone else must die. Each student wears a collar around their neck which will explode if any rules are broken. Forced to kill their highschool chums and girlfriends the once popular kids are murdered by the geeky angry kids. Groups and alliances form outside of the traditional social norms, and each click has their own internal game to deal with. Not as bloody or gorey as many reviews suggest however the film is ultra-violent, realistic and the loss of innocence is quite disturbing. The viewer is left questioning what they would do in the same situation. Almost impossible to find a region 0 NTSC version in Canada. Good Luck!!! |

| 42 pupils go for a school trip. They think so until the army kidnap them and take them to a deserted island. This is no pic-nic. This is a game with rules : every teenager has an explosive necklace. This means you should not be in a defined danger area. In three days, there must be only one person alive left. The pupils don't have any choice anymore : they must kill each other.
With the same methods as Paul Verhoeven, Kinji Fukasaku shoots this horrible movie like an "indiana jones" flick. BR is a real slap in the face and his provocating director points different issues about our society and the japan society more particularly.
Fukasaku talks about very serious and important things but this doesn't prevent him from making some black humour. For example, there is a bodycount after each murder sequence. Takeshi Kitano plays the master of ceremony and he is excellent one more time. He seems to be very quiet but he's deadly if you make something wrong.
Fukasaku could be related as well to Oliver Stone for his spectacular and treatment about graphic violence. There are lot of gory moments in Battle Royale. However, Fukasaku remains responisble and this is no gratuitous violence that he shows. If Battle Royale is very violent, this is because its characters have a violent behavior. Brutal acts are not meant to be funny as in a b-movie. There is a serious matter behind these bloody murders. Through this movie, a sociological and psychological study is shown to us. It shows how violent we can become under certain conditions.
During the game, people are humiliated. The weakest links are eliminated and this recalls us some tv shows running these days. BR could be science fiction but some trash tv shows could be closer to BR than we could guess. Of course it's not a matter of life and death but how can we know where it's going to end. People seem to be capable of everything as long as there is a lot of money to win.
To some characters, killing each other is not only a question of surviving. The script contains a lot of subplots. These are usual problems between teenagers : falling in love, flirting, jealousy, sex talking, etc. Before BR, these arguing would be settled with insults and some bas blows. But here they have knives and guns. This shows that murder can quickly become justified if we can feel that we are in our right.
The movie was a pretty big hit at the japanese box office. Apparently a lot of young people appreciate it, but we could be concerned about how they understood the matter. Fukasaku shot this masterpiece when he was 70 years old. It is admirable to see the high energy he put into this movie. He was just announcing he will shoot Battle Royale 2 when he died at the beginning of 2003... |

| Japanese director Kinji Fukusaku's masterpiece of a movie comes flying in from nowhere and hits you right in the kisser with a clinched fist! It slaps you across the face and begs you to f**k with it! His violent vision of a futuristic Japan in which high school children are randomly kidnapped, whisked away to an isolated island, given a variety of weapons, and forced to kill each other in various, wonderfully-creative, blood-splattered, gore-filled ways is just simply, without a doubt, a pleasure to watch. Think of it as the Lord Of The Flies survival-of-the-fittest classic meets Ice Cube's "hunt 'em down" action flick Surviving The Game. So with that said, I believe very little additional info is actually needed, but I'll give ya some more in case that wasn't enough to wet your whistle.
First, its "Go Right For The Jugular" attitude is certainly welcomed in a movie which could ONLY be made in an overseas market for the simple fact of its content. It's about a classroom of high school kids who have been impartially selected for the BR (Battle Royale) Act. What? Why? Well, adults in Japan feel that they have lost control of their children; and through this forced contest, their hopes for a respectable future will be restored by the surviving participant. Yup, that's right, participant! Out of 42 classmates, only ONE can walk away at the end or EVERYONE dies. That begs this hallowing question to be answered by all those playing this "life or death" scenario: "Could you kill your best friend?"
The food for thought (and great storytelling) is there all day long! So, I will go on the record and say that this film is quite possibly the COOLEST product to ever hit my DVD player! (Down, GENE, down!) And that's saying a lot because quite a few really great Asian films have passed through it. And I can only imagine the joys of seeing this movie on the big screen. But I will admit that I was also saddened and it nearly brought tears to my eyes to see all those beautiful young Japanese girls get murdered when I could most certainly think of a better, more pleasurable way to occupy their time on that island. Aside from that though, its somewhat "reality show" atmosphere is also a nice presence since I'm a big fan of the popular Survivor television series. And what about actor Ando Masanobu's super-role as the crazed killer, Kiriyama?! Not to mention, actress Kou Shibasaki as the pure sadistic, evil psychotic goddess, Mitsuko. Yow!
But mark my words, this movie, once it gets some world exposure, will probably spawn a plethora of wannabe's and cheap imitations and cause a quite a ruckus when some stupid kid decides to go into his school and kill one of his classmates and say that he did it because he saw it in this movie. The media will most certainly have a field day with it then, and, of course, this will drive up the demand to see it and the whole mess will probably start all over again. But I confess, I loved it! I really did! If a DVD could wear out from multiple viewings, then my import DVD must be on the brink of destruction. This was a REAL TREASURE that came at the most perfect time and reconfirmed my heart-aching affection for those movies that try to go "too far". And I do believe that this was the film that finally pushed me to seek out all those other obscure Asian movies that I'd been hearing so much about and it also inspired me to start writing my own reviews in the hopes of promoting the often under-appreciated Asian Cinema as well. And DAMN, what a truly wild ride it's been so far! So I must say... "Arrigato, Kinjo-San!" |

 | | | | WHOA!!! Talk about a mix of "Lord of the Flies", "Survivor" and "Surviving the Game". If you can get a hold of this film in North America, you'll find it graphic and violent. With a touchy and somewhat taboo subject matter, this film dares to explore the darker side of the human spirit. Kids killing kids and the graphic, violent nature of it. | Battle Royale is based on the shockwave novel by Koushun Takami, which is a bestseller in Japan, and which has become very controversial in a very short time (and it is really easy to understand why). The plot is relatively simple (a class of junior high school students are forced to kill each other on a desert island, the last survivor wins and can go back home), but it is this simplicity that makes its strength. No need for a very long prologue before we enter the main act. Each of the 42 pupils involved in this "game" are not volunteers (no one would be..,), and of course they are forced to kill their best friends /girlfriends in order to survive this horror. The personalities and characteristics of each of the participants are of course very contrasted and even if there are some cliches, well, the worst has been avoided. There are even quite "realistic" (even if it is very difficult to judge what can be realistic with such a plot) moments. The transcription of the inner thoughts of the characters, which is one of the strengths of the book, is averagely well retranscripted. Takeshi Kitano plays a "teacher" (whose name is ...Kitano), leading the operation of surveilliance of this "game". It is very difficult to give an objective comment on this movie. Violent. Ultra-Violent. And bloody. This is for sure. The book has to be read for a more complete description of the hesitations and fears, but the movie restranscripts very well the book is the sense that it is all "absurd". There is no real meaning to this violence. The students know this, but it can not be avoided. It is quite sad that the movie dropped an essential background element of the book (the story in the book takes place in an imaginery Japan which would have not lost WWII, and the movie takes place in a slightly modified modern Japan), but I guess that making this happen in the "real-world" shows that there is no need to go to an imaginary world to see to what extreme behaviors humans are capable of. |
