A pretty simple yet effective romance story set deep in the jungle. Plenty of boobs, a dash of cannibal action, and several scenes of (seemingly real) animal violence, including a live goat getting beheaded. Mmmmmmmm.

I very much enjoyed "Man From Deep River" and felt that it was somewhat different to most "cannibal" films in my collection. It has an innocence that most films in the genre lack, and I think the film benefits from that.

The print used in Shriek Show's disc is beautiful and the film looks great in widescreen. Star Ivan Rassimov plays the part of a Westerner lost deep in the jungle and captured by a primitive tribe very well. And his love interest, played by Me Me Lai, is very pleasing to the senses.

Even the much-discussed animal scenes are interesting. Ever wanted to see a mongoose fight a cobra to the death? Such a scene exists in "Man From Deep River", though it's not for everyone.

This one's a lot of fun.

A big fan of cannibal flicks, I'd never taken the time to see this one for some reason. The uncut version is totally tasteless and features loads of animal violence. There's also little snippets of rape and cannibalism to keep the jaded viewer interested. No wonder the cannibal film became such a popular genre after this one came out...

The first of the Cannibal Flicks.

This was the first of the 6 major Italian Cannibal flicks of the 70's, (and early 80's). And it isn't that bad at all. It has a quite good story, and the acting is surprisingly good. The love story is a little far-fetched, but the film itself is quite enjoyable, except, once again for the real animal deaths.

Not as good as either of Deodato's, but certainly better than Eaten Alive, Cannibal Apocalypse, or Trap Them and Kill Them.
