Two policemen have complete freedom in their actions against crime: Alfredo and Antonio do not hesitate to cold-bloodedly kill the criminals they are hunting down, maintaining a cynical and light-hearted attitude even in the most threatening situations.
Overview:
Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man (1976) is the most violent and unconventional Italian style detective film of its times. The credit goes to both the director Ruggero Deodato, extremely apt at telling stories in a strong tone (he made the famous and greatly censored Cannibal Holocaust), and the scriptwriter Fernando di Leo, author of the best Italian noir films (Milano calibro 9 (Calibre 9), La Mala Ordina (Manhunt) and The Boss. Above all, the psychological and behavioural description of the main characters, the two policemen, members of an anti-crime squad who have complete freedom in their actions against crime, had never been seen before: Alfredo (Marc Porel) and Antonio (Ray Lovelock) do not hesitate to cold-bloodedly kill the criminals they are hunting down, maintaining a cynical and light-hearted attitude even in the most threatening situations. The original story hinted at a hidden homosexual component between the two men which in the film is subdued and Alfredo and Antonio are made to act like incorrigible playboys. Due to the extreme violence, certain scenes were censored - in the most brutal one, Renato Salvatori tears an opponent's eye out and squashes it under his shoe – but even once these scenes were removed, the film was only released for adult viewing.
The viewers showed an appreciation for the unusual operation and Deodato was already working on a sequel starring the same actors, Porel and Lovelock, which was never made due to a disagreement between the two actors.
