| A very good Stephen Chow film that showcases his athletic and comedic chops once again. Great fight choreography by the Yeun clan, great Yuen Cheung Yan, most notably the duel between Stephen Chow and David Lam Wai in the brothel, which is worth rewinding again again to capture its true greatness!
Engrossing plot about a spoiled, wealthy but illiterate martial artist who tries to capture the heart of a young lady by winning a competition that would award him the title of KUNG FU SCHOLAR. Events end up casting him and his father out of their home and into the streets as beggars for eternity. Add in some plot twists and the two find themselves in an all-out war between the beggars and corrupt officals.
This movie is definitely worth checking out. However, I would have liked to have seen more of the great hand-to-hand kung fu battles that Cheung Yan and his team constructed in some of the earlier scenes. Also, some of the wire work and speeding up of the film didn't work for me. |

One of Stephen Chow's best movies ever!! There are a lot of funny moments in this film that'll have you laughing hysterically, and suprisingly there are even some decent action scenes as a treat. Stephen Chow is great and shows that he can be both funny and serious whenever it is required. I loved this film and I know you'll love it as much as I do.-Movie Freak (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!

A pretty funny martial arts movie. Stephen Chow's "sleepy style" kung fu is great.-Shmicked (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!

| Chow (Chiau) Sing Chi plays a rich guy that is illiterate but a good martial artist. His character is very lazy and is only looking for one woman, which is Yu Chang, a daughter of the leader of beggars. Chow learns he can only marry her if he proves himself to be a strong leader. He then got an idea to enter an exam of knowledge and mostly martial arts. He then loses the exam, although he won more rounds than his other rival. It turns out the competition was rigged for money, and there was supposed to be a murder of Chow's character. But that was not it, he actually lost because they found out he was illiterate and couldn't write his name. When the emperor found out he cheated, he sentenced him and his father to become beggars for life???? And that's not all...
Chow has proven his martial arts ability with some occasional doubles. Don't expect a "Shaolin Soccer" with this film, although it was a great film. It does have different qualityies that not that many Hong Kong films possess: being funny, and having a good story.
I'm not actually sure if Yuen Wo Ping played Uncle Mo, but I know his brother Yuen Cheung Yan played cunning Chung who was the beggar that sat next to Chow by the tree.

| This is the tale of Beggar So, I think, who pioneered the "Drunken Style" of kung fu fighting; here, however, with Chow in the lead role, it's the tale of a good-hearted lay about who, despite his illiteracy, attempts to win the heart of Cheung Man (a sort of beggar princess) by becoming the top Scholar of Martial Arts. When, despite his prowess, he is cheated out of the title and sentenced to be a beggar all of his life, the movie becomes almost cloyingly melodramatic. He and his father, capably played by Ng Man Tat, are sentenced to the streets, where they are forced to cadge steamed buns just to survive; Chow despairs and spends most of his time sleeping, until he is told in his dreams of a new reason to live--and a new style of kung fu to fight for that reason. It's..."Sleeping Fist Kung Fu"! A terrific ending, with hordes of beggars fighting evil rebel soldiers and Chow going toe-to-toe with a dastardly kung-fu necromancer, makes for a fulfilling two hours well spent. |
