A great and misunderstood classic. A social commentary on everything: Hollywood's negative typcasting of African-Americans, race relations, religion, the Mafia, the inner-city, and more. All this done with great animation, storytelling, and incredible voiceovers (Barry White, Al Lewis as the Godfather, Charles Gordone and the amazing Scatman Crothers). A soundtrack needs to be released (which never was, even in the 70's).

Ralph Bakshi is a genius!! The is guaranteed the best blaxploitation film ever made. As well, the best animated film work that I've seen. He explores the battle of the classes and the races. He offends everyone, so be ready. Highly recommended!!

If you are easily offended, don't watch this film. If not, give it a try.

Ralph Bakshi pulls no punches in this Harlem-based take on the tale of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear. No race, religion, social status, gender, sexual preference or curse word is safe from teasing. The "N" word flows quite frequently, and not as a term of 'Gangsta' endearment.

While the film is chock full of outrageous, over-the-top, Felix The Cat/Max Fleischer-esque, slapstick animation, the film takes the opportunity to mix in gripping social commentary about America, during that time period. Animation and live action are brought together well before Roger Rabbit. Listen for the voice of Al "Grandpa" Lewis from the Munsters TV series.
