Director Fruit Chan became one of my favorite directors of all fuckin' time instantly as I watched "The Longest Summer", his second directorial. His first being "Made In Hong Kong" starring Sam Lee (his breakthrough film! nominated or won best actor ). So two films in a row as I watched and shocked how HK directors can be so damn creative. Now no need to say, you know I had fuckin' high hopes. Note to self: Stop having high expectations for every motherf'ing movie I'm bout to see. One word, dissappointing.

The movie is bout a girl, in her early 20's working as a prostitute in Hong Kong. As the movie goes on, it follows her life going back to China and visiting her parents.

Now back to me (heh )......maybe I'm just a buffoon that only enjoy slapstick comedies of Nick Cheung or action movies done by Jackie Chan and this and that. But knowing that I enjoyed the past two Fruit Chan films, why wouldn't I like Durain Durain? Even I didn't get it. I really wanted to give this movie a chance. This shit was about 2 hours long. 20 minutes into movie I found myself looking around everywhere BUT the TV. But I kept telling myself this is, after all, a fucking Fruit Chan movie. The good part has to come, or the twist or whatever...just something that would catch my attention.

Again, the movie was 2 hours. The first half was bout life as a prostitute. Some interesting camera shots here and there as expected, but still....throughout the first half, each scene was just too documentary-ish. Like how each scene when the main character is talking to her customer before fucking, it would have some 'normal' dialogue and no background music whatsoever. The dialogue sometimes seems so 'normal', it made that scene pointless to begin with. But then again, its raw and its real dialect. Its as if there wasn't even a script written and we're just seeing two person communicating and exchanging words smoothly. Thats tight but again, this shit ain't got a story. First half of the film: Life As a Prostitute...pointless and not much plot but shot creatively.

Second part of the movie, going back to visit. Interesting note, before she left Hong Kong...her last day of work she had 38 customers within that day. She wanted to be in the Guinness world record book. Anyways, by now a normal person would gave up and stop watching this but being a Fruit Chan Fan that I am, I stuck around just to see what would the second half has to offer and what would the ending be like. Sadly, no shit. Nothing...its like a documentary or biography that went nowhere. No moral. No nothing, just a girl who works hard as a prostitute and came back to visit her parents. Second/Last half of the film: Quite pointless.

I wonder will the lead actress on "Durian Durian" will have more movie offered to her. Fruit Chan made Sam Lee a star after casting him for his first directorial debut, "Made in Hong Kong". He did the same for Tony Ho when he did "The Longest Summer". Both fan-fucking-tastic movies I don't regret watching. Too bad I can't say the same for Durian Durian. Basically, the movie just missing a decent plot. There's nothing much to 'wow' at besides the camera work and some interesting cinematography.

Hardcore fan of Fruit Chan like myself regret watching it after one viewing. Unless there are kinds of people thats MORE hardcore than Hardcore itself? I don't know, maybe I need another viewing to actually enjoy it.
