I simply love this movie, and not only because it has haunted me since I first saw it as a small child. Lo Lieh is chilling as Pak Mei, the White Eyebrow Priest, popularized in the west by Tarantino many decades later, and does an excellent job as the director's chair. Gordon Liu is amazing, as can be expected in most every movie that he stars in, especially where Liu Chia-Liang is the choreographer. Kara Hui Ying Hung and Johnny Wang Lung Wei play excellent supporting roles as well. This all star cast makes for a film that is incredible in almost every way, except for the occasional silly slapstick aside, but even these cannot take away from this film's irresistible appeal.

This movie is somewhat difficult to define. Some refer to it as a sequel or re-make of another movie ("Executioners From Shaolin"), but much is changed and honestly at points I was confused at the beginning as to exactly who the characters were fighting. To make things more confusing, Lau himself was on the set for much of the time and was doing choreography for fights or "action". Don't get caught up in the who-plays-whom in this film, just sit back and watch the action.

Hung (Gordon Liu) manages to kill Pai Mei (Lo Lieh) and is happy he can finally rest and not worry about the bad guys anymore. Hung longs to have a simple home with a women he loves. The leader of the bad guys have no intention of letting him stay alive. For revenge the clan attacks the village where Hung lives and kills everyone except Hung and his sister-in-law.

I don't know who wrote the script, but the dialogue isn't very useful to the movie itself. There are still a lot of questions left unanswered. Even after watching it several times there are several elements that cause confusion including Lo Lieh being more than one villain. Hung realizes he doesn't have the skills he needs in order to defeat his foe and his sister-in-law (Kara Hui) teaches him *soft* embroidery style that provides another skill.

Hsiao Ho is listed in the cast but I certainly didn't see him but I did notice some of the stunt men acrobatic stunts tended to be the same making me wonder if he was playing different people for action scenes.

One thing you can be sure of is better than expected fight scenes. The one-on-one are all with Liu and Lieh. The fact they are both excellent fighters and the fighting directors experience is extensive is the saving grace of the film. Unfortunately there are lengthy attempts at humor and they don't work - just way too much time talking and not enough fighting. And a few abilities that go beyond typical physical fighting skills. For example Pak Mei has the unique ability to defy gravity and simply float away from an attack by anyone. He also has a secret place in his body where his life force is contained so that if his adversary grows near the target he flies away and moves it to a different part of his body.

There are some very good action fight scenes, in fact they are the saving grace of the whole film. It is credit to Lieh, Liu and the experienced stunt fight stuntmen who make the movie worth watching. I have been told by many people into martial arts movies that this is a real classic, and a must see. I cannot go that far. It was filmed at a time when the money makers were trying to figure out why the interest in martial arts was beginning to wane.

(According to HKFlix this film is allegedly part of a trilogy, which includes (in order) "Men From The Monastery", "Executioners From Shaolin", and "Fist Of The White Lotus".)

This was not an easy film to review. I am always concerned about providing accurate information even in a small detail. But what seems to be correct, after a little investigation has sometimes turned out to be wrong. I have provided as much as I am comfortable with but I'm certain those with more experience can supply a much better review. One last thing. This does have enough decent fights to be entertaining even if are not aware of the Pak Mei background story.

YThe confusion of Pai Mei with his successor is a common one I have made myself, as MS10197 has kindly informed me. This is a worthy film. Where it rates in relation to "Executioners from Shaolin" is a touchy subject. I prefer the older film.Jeffrey Frawley

In the heart of every true "old school" martial arts movie there is a struggle to overcome traditional moral adversities and unethical desires. This is the strongest point in this high action film, "Fist of the White Lotus".

Gordon Liu's character not only energetically believes in developing his external fighting techniques, but knows in the innermost part of his soul/being that he must also desire to learn how to develop and integrate internal "soft" fighting techniques in order to increase his ability and standard of kung fu. He was made aware of his shortcomings using only his external tiger/crane against the adversarial "White Brow Monk" character played by Lo Lieh. The attitude of Liu's desire was expressed when he humbles himself and receives "soft fist" training techniques from his sister who gives an expert illustration of a technique that starts off a lot like Yang Tai Chi Quan but integrates other soft fist forms into a deadly method of closing the gap and finding the opponent's weak spots.

Many martial arts films attempt to showcase "soft fist" fighting techniques and style, but this film, after all avenues of weapons, techniques and styles have been exhausted, simply weaves revenge into good old fashioned retaliatory justice.

"Fist Of The White Lotus" grabs your attention immediately, during the opening credits, with the background of the rivalry between the White Lotus chief and Gordon Liu's Hung Wen-tin. The background is further laid when, in an attempt to capture and kill the murderers of his friend Pai Mei, he kills Wen-tin's brother and sister.

This beautiful opening melee is the first showcase of the skill of the White Lotus chief. He casually walks through sword attacks as if it were a Sunday afternoon in the park. If that doesn't cement his badassedness in viewers' minds, then the fact that no matter how good the kung fu, he cannot be touched should. I was personally disappointed that Siu-ching, the sister played by Yeung Jing-jing, had so little screen time. She went out valiantly covering Mei-ha's (her pregnant sister Kara Hui) escape.

The rest of the movie is basic revenge flick fodder, but two things stand out to me. The first being that without Kara Hui, this movie goes nowhere. Okay, her woman's sewing style kung fu seems improbable but adds much needed finesse to Wen-tin's tiger/crane style. Mei-ha (Hui) is pregnant when the movie opens and doesn't get to display her skills until maybe midway through the feature, but it's a subtle, but effective show of her skills.

The other thing that stood out to me seemed to be that the White Lotus chief wanted someone to give him a challenge. That's the only explanation I can think of for him letting Wen-tin live time after time to return and take his revenge.

There is very good action throughout "Fist Of The White Lotus". Every fight has something special, my favorites being Wen-tin's first fight with the twin Tai Chi swordsmen and his subsequent fight with White Lotus that leaves him battered, bruised, and rolling down the temple stairs.

Thankfully, there is very little in the way of humor. What little we see is courtesy of Mei-ha's brother with a whiny disposition and bad hairstyle. But, I did find the attack in the bath pretty humorous.

All in all, "Fist Of The White Lotus" is an entertaining movie. Although some claim it pales in comparison to the superior "Executioners From Shaolin" that it may or may not be a sequel to. See for yourself.

Following up "Shaolin Executioners" both vaguely in plot and closely in narrative structure, this movie delivers some good fighting, and some odd plot devices. Gordon Liu Chia-Hui does his usual stand-up job of training for revenge, though Lo Lieh's millionth version of Pai-Mei the white browed priest gets a bit silly. His indestructibility and super powers get wilder every time they use the character. Some of the comedy is limp, but it is kept to a minimum. Also, the movie features Kara Hui Ying-Hung, and there is nothing wrong with that!

Classic old skool with Gordon Liu in top form in familiar revenge formula, seeking to avenge his fallen comrades by taking on the white lotus sect and their nasty leader, Pai Mei, played excellently by Lo Lei. Also a great cameo by the graceful and highly skilled Hui Ying Hung, who helps train our hero in her own special way. There are some silly dozy moments with Hui's brother and Gordon which can drag on a bit, but all in all a classic ol' skool epic with high quality kung fu action and plenty of it.

The first Shaw movie I ever bought, big fan. Quintessential film of the infamous Priest Pai Mei.

While there are some gaping plot holes (probably due to sub-standard translation in the English dubs), the action is fantastic. Gordon Liu and Lo Lieh truly bring out the best in one another's martial ability with their three scenes together.

Features acupuncture in fighting and addresses different styles and approaches to fighting.

An outstanding remake of "Executioners Of Shaolin" also starring the late great Lo Lieh. Lo Lieh is at his best as Priest White Lotus, head of the White Lotus Clan. Some think that he is portraying Pai Mei whom he has played in "Executioners" and "Abbot Of Shaolin" (a.k.a. "A Slice Of Death"). However, in the English dubbed version of Fist of the White Lotus, Lo Lieh clearly states that he wants revenge for the killing of his classmate Pai Mei. Lo Lieh directs beautifully and the fight sequences are excellent as always when choreographed by Liu Chia Liang! Lo Lieh's best since the classic "King Boxer" (a.k.a. "Five Fingers of Death")!

Great follow-up to "Executioners of Shaolin", though not really a sequel but more of another version of the story. A bit more humor, but plenty--and I mean plenty--of great action. It was directed by and starred the late Lo Lieh and he did an excellent job on the former and the latter as Pei Mei character.

A killer sequel to "Abbot of Shaolin" and "Executioners from Shaolin". I would consider these to be the sequel to "Invincible Shaolin", as well, but that's just my opinion. Anyway, this movie totally kicks butt. Basically a rehash of "Executioners from Shaolin", but bad-ass nonetheless.

I have seen hundreds of kung fu movies and this one is my favorite. Gordon Liu's character in this movie is very likeable. It's easy to relate to him in this revenge flick. You have to love his determination in this movie. He actually receives a lot of beatings by Pai Mei, not just one. But he never gives up. His determination and ability to go from being fun loving and humorous to intense and powerful in this movie is great. The fight sequences cover all grounds of fights seen in similar movies, but you can see it all since this movie combines it all. There is some decent display of his Tiger-Crane style kung fu here that he uses to wreck people too. This movie is well balanced with Liu's silliness and intensity and is probably the most fun kung-fu movie I have ever seen.

Excellent kung fu flick based on revenge. Lo Lieh is once again great as legendary baddie, Pai Mai. This is a remake of the classic "Executioners Of Shaolin", but I believe surpasses it for mainly one reason: Gordon Liu, who was killed early in the original. Although it may not be one of Liu's finest performances, it is still worth mentioning among kung fu classics

I'm going to go against the grain on this one and say I don't like this flick as much as most Gordon Liu fans do. Don't get me wrong, there are some decent fight scenes, but what got me the most was the repetitive go fight/get beat up/go back and retrain/go back and fight but not 100% ready/get beat up/go train again, etc. Not to be homophobic, but Gordon Liu had some gay moments in his training/fighting (trust me, I understand the whole logic behind it all). The end scene is the best though with the acuputure needles. This is a remake of "Executioners Of Shaolin" with Gordon Liu taking his revenge on the White Lotus Clan. I watched the PanMedia Version 1 DVD. Warning for those wanting to get the IVL/Deltamac versions, the audio remixes on those are horrible. You never know, Dragon Dynasty may release this in the future (that's if they've acquired the rights to it) and give it a proper remaster.

This has to be in the top 10 of greatest kung fu /martial arts movies made

The reasons are simple:

  • It's dead fun to watch and the action is kick-ass and so is the plot.
  • Gordon Liu basically is trying to get back at Pai Mei, played by the director lo lieh . Pai Mei is basically industrucitble--nothing can even get close to him. This just leads Gordon to find ways of getting him. Even better, Johnny Wang Lung Wei (common villain in a lot of SB films) plays co-villain next to Lo Lieh, and has some brilliant fight scenes with Gordon. Who steals the show? It's indeed Pai Mei--probably one of the greaest villains in martial arts history.
  • Even though it's a revenge film (typical kung fu), the revenge part of the film seems to be thrown out in the middle of the film, and the plot turns more into Gordon trying to beat Lo Lieh (almost forgetting that Pai Mei had killed Gordon's brother, who both together killed Pai Mei's classmate).
Some scenes will just make you laugh intentionally or unintentionally. For example, the last scene in which Lo Lieh jumps out of a bath while Gordon gate-crashes his meditation. This is very entertaining; the action scenes aren't repetitive either. This is simply a sequel to "Executioners From Shaolin". Simply, this is one of those late night classics, a top 10 kung fu film.

Is it that good ?

Basicaly, I went off martial arts films for awhile after seeing a majority of the great ones. However I idiotically decided to leave this one for another time. But I watched this and it was like watching martial arts without wirework or large special effects and CGI for the first time.

FOTWL is another Shaw Brothers classic choreographed by Lau Kar Leung and directed by Lo Lieh. Bizarre, it almost mirrors Lau Kar Leung's own Executioners From Shaolin. Some viewers have disliked it because it was basically a remake, however, Lau Kar Leung's fight choreography in FOTWL is more complex and entertaining and worth a try. The English dub calls the Lotus Chief's deadly technique, the "Hundred Pace Palm" which sounds really cool, the English subtitles call it the "Soul Catching Fist" which sounds cool too.

I had seen the dubbed version several years ago, and thought it an enjoyable but unexceptional film with good martial arts choreography. Now that I have seen it in its original form I feel very differently. Liu Chia-hui/Lau Kar Fei gives a performance worthy of his martial arts skills. Lo Lieh's direction of a familiar story is first rate, and his performance here as Pai Mei, while not superior to that he gave in "Executioners from Shaolin," is very fine.

[The remastered, original language version is] the version to see if one wants something more than a pleasant diversion.

When I think of the "old school", this is the first movie that pops in my head. Gordon Liu was phenomenal in so many movies, but this one takes the cake.
